Job summary

White Bay Search is seeking a Solution Technology Lead to provide technical leadership for a customer development team in a growing Australian SaaS business. You will translate requirements into practical engineering approaches, review designs and code, mentor developers and maintain scalable, maintainable customer solutions.

The role centers on strong Java/Spring expertise, leadership of offshore developers, and direct interaction with customers and senior stakeholders to shape delivery

Job description

You’ve got a successful Australian software company, a growing customer base, eight offshore developers and an increasing amount of customer development work coming through the door.

The developers know how to build.

The Delivery Managers know what the customers need.

What’s missing is the person in the middle who can make the whole thing work properly.

That’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a Solution Technology Lead to take technical leadership of a customer development team within an established Australian SaaS business providing a core technology platform to some of the country’s largest insurance organisations.

This is not a pure Architecture role.

It is not a traditional Engineering Manager role.

And it definitely isn’t a Project Manager role with a technical job title.

You’ll need to understand Java properly, lead developers confidently, work directly with customers and keep one eye on what is coming down the delivery pipeline.

Because eight developers with twelve developers’ worth of work is a problem.Eight developers with three developers’ worth of work is also a problem.

Your job is to avoid both.

What you’ll actually be doing

• You’ll lead a team of approximately eight offshore developers delivering integrations, enhancements and customer-specific development around the platform.
• You’ll work closely with Delivery Managers, Portfolio Management and the wider technology team to understand what work is coming, what development capacity is required and how the team should be allocated.
• You’ll also be the senior technical voice in customer conversations.

Sometimes the answer will be:“Yes, the platform already does that.”

Sometimes:“Yes, but we’ll need some custom development.”

And occasionally:“We could build that, but we really shouldn’t.”

You need to be comfortable having all three conversations.

• On the technical side, you’ll translate requirements into sensible engineering approaches, review designs and code, resolve technical problems, mentor developers and make sure customer solutions remain scalable, maintainable and consistent with the underlying platform.
• You don’t need to spend your entire day coding.
• But you do need to be technically current enough that if someone puts Java code, an API design or an integration problem in front of you, you know exactly what you’re looking at.

What we’re looking for

• You’re likely coming from a background as a Java Technical Lead, Development Lead, Lead Engineer, Technical Delivery Lead or similar.
• You’ll ideally bring:Strong Java and Spring/Spring Boot experience
• Experience leading software developers technically and operationally
• Solution design and architecture capability
• API, integration and distributed systems experience
• Experience working with offshore or distributed engineering teams
• Strong code review and engineering governance experience
• The ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions
• Confidence dealing directly with customers and senior stakeholders
• Some understanding of development capacity, resource planning or utilisation across multiple projects

Experience within SaaS, software platforms, consulting or customer-facing technology delivery would be particularly useful.

• What matters more is that you can move comfortably between three worlds:The customer.
• The developers.
• The delivery team.

And somehow keep all three moving in roughly the same direction.

The company is an established Australian SaaS fintech provider. It has experienced significant growth over recent years and now supports a substantial customer base through a large Delivery function, with further expansion planned.

You’ll be joining a business where this role has genuine visibility and where there is real scope to shape how the customer development capability operates as it grows.

The position offers:

• Hybrid working, with approximately 50% of the week in the office.
