Job summary

Youth Justice and Victim Support Mackay is seeking an Indigenous Service Support Officer to assist staff in delivering culturally appropriate support and intervention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in youth justice programs.

The role requires Indigenous status, a Blue Card, and a valid driver’s licence; travel within the region may be required to visit sites and see program delivery.

Qualifications

• Must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (Identified role).
• Must provide/nominate a reference from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to attest cultural capabilities.
• Valid Blue Card linked to the organisation before starting.
• Driver's licence (unrestricted C class) is mandatory.

Youth Justice and Victim Support – Mackay QLD

The role of the Indigenous Service Support Officer is to assist Youth Justice Service Centre staff to provide support and intervention services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people subject to youth justice intervention.

Identified vacancies/mandatory requirements:

• This role is designated as an Identified role for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples based on the genuine occupational requirements, in accordance with section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, and the Recruitment and Selection (Directive 07/23).
• Applicants must also nominate (or provide written reference from) an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to their knowledge, skills or experience to demonstrate cultural capabilities as required. This person may be a community member, supervisor, or work colleague.
• Drivers' license: it is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted “C” Class driver's licence. Officers are required to drive government vehicles as a part of their day-to-day work.
• This role is designated as Regulated employment as the position provides support services to children and young people and therefore will require a valid Blue Card to be linked with the organisation prior to starting. • While the position is based in Mackay travel within the region for site visits and to other regional/departmental offices may be required in this role. This may include overnight stays.

As Indigenous Service Support Officer, you will specifically:

• Assist and support youth justice staff and relevant community stakeholders in culturally appropriate assessment, case planning and interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families in accordance with relevant legislative provisions, statutory delegations, departmental policies, procedures, and contemporary best practice.
• Implement culturally appropriate individualised case plans through designing and implementing intervention strategies, negotiating with service providers, and linking clients to the services/supports they require (including formal and informal services, government and non-government agencies).
• Consult and effectively work with relevant stakeholders including families, elders, other key community members, community agencies and government departments to enhance the capacity of these stakeholders to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families subject to youth justice interventions and their families.
• Undertake a range of record and information management tasks including maintenance of case notes and records, preparation of reports and performance reporting
• Participate productively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team involving a range of internal and external stakeholders and service providers to achieve quality casework outcomes.
• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
