Youth Justice and Victim Support – Atherton QLD

The role of the Indigenous Service Support Officer is to assist Youth Justice Service Centre staff to provide support and intervention services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people subject to youth justice intervention.

This is designated as an Indigenous Identified role. Under accordance with section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, and the Recruitment and Selection (Directive 07/23) it is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island person.

To allow the selection panel to confirm that you are eligible to be considered for this First Nations Identified role, the panel may either:

• accept your written assertion that you are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; or
• obtain from you, as part of your formal application, documentary evidence attesting to your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. Applicants must also nominate (or provide written reference from) an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to their knowledge, skills or experience to demonstrate cultural capabilities as required. This person may be a community member, supervisor, or work colleague.

As Indigenous Service Support Officer, you will specifically:

• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Assist and support youth justice staff and relevant community stakeholders in culturally appropriate assessment, case planning and interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families in accordance with relevant legislative provisions, statutory delegations, departmental policies, procedures, and contemporary best practice.
• Implement culturally appropriate individualised case plans through designing and implementing intervention strategies, negotiating with service providers, and linking clients to the services/supports they require (including formal and informal services, government and non-government agencies).
• Consult and effectively work with relevant stakeholders including families, elders, other key community members, community agencies and government departments to enhance the capacity of these stakeholders to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families subject to youth justice interventions and their families.
• Undertake a range of record and information management tasks including maintenance of case notes and records, preparation of reports and performance reporting.
• Participate productively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team involving a range of internal and external stakeholders and service providers to achieve quality casework outcomes.
• You understand the impacts of historical and contemporary policy and practices upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You have a demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively, and with humility, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Work will be required to be performed within the spread of hours 0600 to 1800. At times work may be required to be performed outside of the spread hours. Remuneration, or otherwise, for work performed outside the spread of hours will be determined with the applicable Awards provision.
• Officers are required to drive government vehicles as a part of their day-to-day work; therefore, it is a requirement that the applicant hold a current “C” Class Drivers licence.
• While the position is based in Atherton/ Mareeba, travel within the region for site visits and to other regional officers will be required in this role. This may include overnight stays and flights to remote destinations.
