Job summary

Tailored Spatial Solutions (TSS), based in Cairns, seeks a hands-on hydrographic survey assistant for a casual role. You will contribute across varied hydrographic projects from coastal to rivers and remote locations, assisting planning, field acquisition, processing and delivery using modern survey equipment and software.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team to mobilise equipment, collect data, process datasets and produce client deliverables, ensuring safety and quality on every task.

Qualifications

• Prior hydrographic or bathymetric survey experience.
• Experience with multibeam echo sounder systems.
• Strong understanding of GNSS, tides and datum control.
• Experience processing hydrographic survey data.
• Good written communication and reporting skills.
• Practical equipment setup and field operations.
• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to safety and quality.
• Flexibility for as-needed work.

Job description

This is a hands-on casual role offering the opportunity to work across a varied range of hydrographic and spatial projects, from coastal and port environments through to rivers, dams and remote locations. The successful applicant will assist with the planning, mobilisation, field acquisition, processing and delivery of hydrographic survey projects using modern survey equipment and software.

Key responsibilities

• Planning and undertaking hydrographic and bathymetric surveys
• Operating multibeam and associated hydrographic survey systems
• Mobilising, calibrating and maintaining survey equipment
• Collecting and quality-checking hydrographic and positioning data
• Processing, analysing and interpreting survey data
• Preparing survey plans, datasets, reports and client deliverables
• Undertaking vessel-based and unmanned surface vessel survey operations
• Integrating hydrographic data with UAV, LiDAR, GIS and other spatial datasets
• Supporting project planning, methodology development and field logistics
• Working with project teams in remote and operational marine environments

About you

• Previous experience undertaking hydrographic or bathymetric surveys
• Experience with multibeam echo sounder systems
• Sound understanding of GNSS, positioning, tides, datum control and survey quality assurance
• Experience processing and managing hydrographic survey data
• Strong computer and technical skills
• Good written communication and report preparation skills
• A practical approach to equipment setup, troubleshooting and field operations
• The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• A strong commitment to safety and quality
• Flexibility to work on an as-required basis
