Job summary

ALS Life Sciences in Scoresby, Victoria is seeking an Assistant Hydrographer to join our Environmental Monitoring team. The role offers on‑the‑job training and support to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography).

This full‑time, permanent position operates on a 9‑day fortnight and involves field visits to remote monitoring sites, data collection, record keeping and assisting in installing new stations as part of a dynamic, safety‑conscious team.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in environmental science, water resources or similar (desirable).
• High level attention to detail, strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Professional oral and written communication skills.
• Able to work cohesively in a team environment.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently.
• Able to work in a variety of environmental conditions including short periods away from home.
• Ability to perform manual handling tasks in outdoor conditions.
• Some experience in the use of hand and power tools.
• Current automatic driver's licence.
• 4WD experience.
• Experience with health, safety and environmental aspects of field work.
• Ability to swim.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on role with teamwork, reliability and initiative.

• Collect and verify environmental data using various software packages and instruments.
• Assist in completing other project and routine works as required.
• Maintain accurate field notes, photographs and maps.
• Assist in upgrading old, and installing new environmental monitoring stations.
• Use of a wide range of hand tools including manual excavation for extended periods.

About the Role

The ALS Hydrographics Team in Scoresby, Victoria have a rare opportunity for an Assistant Hydrographer within the environmental monitoring team. The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training as well as enrolment and support to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography).

The Day to Day

• Hands on role, with a strong focus on teamwork, reliability and initiative
• Routine visitation and maintenance of remote environmental monitoring sites, consisting mainly of stream flow monitoring stations
• Collect and verify environmental data using various software packages and scientific instruments
• Assistance in completing other project and routine works as required
• Accurate Record keeping including field notes, photographs and maps
• Assisting in the upgrade of old, and installation of new environmental monitoring stations
• Use of a wide range of hand tools including manual excavation for extended periods of time
