Job description

Lead the people function for one of Lake Macquarie’s most recognised community organisations.

About the Opportunity

Established in 1922, Belmont 16ft Sailing Club is one of the Hunter Region’s largest clubs and the leading 16ft Skiff sailing club in Australia. Located on the shores of Belmont Bay, the Club is a major destination for dining, entertainment, events and sailing, and has been part of the Lake Macquarie community for more than 100 years.

With a diverse workforce across hospitality, catering, gaming, administration and sailing operations, the Club is also one of the largest employers in the Lake Macquarie region. Our connection to the community extends well beyond our facilities, with significant financial and in‐kind support provided to local schools, sporting organisations, charities, community groups and sustainability initiatives.

The Role

This is not an HR role that operates from the sidelines. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and leading two HR Support, you will have the opportunity to know our people, understand our business and have a genuine impact on the employee experience.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to lead an established HR function, contribute directly to organisational strategy and culture, and work in a role where relationships, visibility and understanding the people behind the business genuinely matter

As Human Resources Manager, you will lead the Club’s HR function across:

  • Employee relations, workplace investigations, grievances, performance management, and disciplinary matters
  • Recruitment, onboarding, workforce planning, succession, and talent development
  • Learning and development and leadership capability
  • Organisational culture, employee engagement, recognition, and wellbeing initiatives
  • Enterprise Agreement interpretation, industrial relations, and employment conditions
  • Rostering and payroll oversight
  • Work Health & Safety, workers compensation, injury management and return to work
  • Psychosocial safety and workplace wellbeing
  • HR systems, employee records, reporting, and digital HR processes
  • Employment policies, procedures, contracts, and workforce governance
  • Organisational change, restructures, and workforce consultation
  • Employer-sponsored visa processes and workforce pathways
  • Apprentice development and partnerships with training, employment, and community organisations
  • Leverage AI, automation and contemporary HR technologies to improve efficiency, decision‑making, employee experience and HR service delivery

A significant part of your role will be building strong relationships across the Club and developing a genuine understanding of our people and operations.

You will provide trusted HR advice and coaching to leaders while remaining accessible and connected to employees across the organisation.

About You

We are looking for an experienced HR professional who understands that effective Human Resources starts with understanding the people and the business.

This role will suit someone who enjoys being visible across the organisation, building genuine relationships and taking the time to understand how different departments operate, the pressures they face and what their people need to succeed.

Strong technical HR capability is important, but so is the ability to apply that knowledge in a practical, fair, and people‑focused way. The successful person will be approachable, credible, and confident, with the judgement to provide clear advice, challenge when necessary and manage difficult or sensitive matters professionally.

You will ideally bring:
  • Minimum five years’ broad generalist HR experience, preferably within an operational, frontline, or similarly complex workforce environment
  • Relevant qualifications in Human Resources, Business, Management or a related discipline, or substantial equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrated experience across the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, workforce planning, learning and development, compliance and employee engagement
  • Strong practical knowledge of Australian employment legislation, industrial relations, Enterprise Agreements, employment conditions, and contemporary HR practice
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex employee relations matters, including grievances, workplace investigations, disciplinary processes and performance management, and coaching leaders through people and workforce matters
  • Experience in workforce planning, succession planning, recruitment strategy, and talent development, including apprenticeship pathways and working with TAFE, apprenticeship providers and operational leaders
  • Experience coordinating employer-sponsored visa processes, including Subclass 482 and 186 pathways, work‐rights requirements, and liaison with immigration advisers
  • Strong understanding of WHS, workers compensation, return to work and psychosocial risk management
  • Payroll capability, including ensuring the accurate application of Enterprise Agreements, employment conditions, allowances, penalties, and entitlements
  • Experience with HR systems, digital processes, workforce reporting, and data analysis
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with sound judgement, confidentiality, organisation, and the ability to build credibility at all levels
  • Ability to balance strategic priorities with practical, hands‑on HR delivery
  • A valid NSW Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) competency, or willingness to obtain both
  • Experience with employer-sponsored visas, apprenticeships, payroll oversight and hospitality or similarly operational workforces would be highly regarded.
