Job description

Also known as: Human resources manager, HR manager, Human resources advisor, Human resources administrator, Human resources officer, Recruiter, Recruitment manager, Recruitment officer

Is this role right for you?

You are a natural leader who knows how to motivate others and use creativity to solve problems. You’ll have excellent communication skills and be able to confidently negotiate and resolve conflict. You’re also patient, well-organised, and a good listener who can show empathy when engaging with people.

What are some example projects or experiences?

HR managers will play an important role in recruiting vital staff into rail organisations to deliver rail projects across the next 10 years. You could find yourself leading a HR team in an engineering firm that supports our rail network. Or you could land a role as a HR manager with a state government department that is spearheading major metro and regional rail projects.

What is the work environment like?

You’ll work in an office, usually in a team with other HR and employee relations professionals. Sometimes you’ll be at your desk, perhaps drafting a new employee policy or planning new training. Other times you’ll be supporting managers with recruitment, or helping to resolve staff conflicts. You may need to investigate employee issues and conduct disciplinary action. You may also be required to run workshops and training sessions. You can find HR roles all around Australia. Most jobs are in cities and towns. Some are in remote areas.

People who work in human resources usually complete a diploma or degree in human resources. Our industry values diverse personal and work experience. Many employers can provide you with opportunities to gain new qualifications and industry experience to help you succeed.

Salaries may vary outside of these ranges, based on company size and location, level of experience, competence and time in role.
