Hazeldene's Chicken Farm in Lockwood, Bendigo, Victoria is seeking a Heavy Vehicle Diesel Mechanic 2IC to join our Vehicle Maintenance team. This hands-on role combines exceptional mechanical skills with leadership responsibilities to support the workshop and coordinate daily tasks.

You will service a diverse fleet including trucks, trailers, forklifts and refrigerated equipment, diagnose faults, perform preventative maintenance and mentor junior mechanics and apprentices while ensuring safety

Heavy Vehicle Diesel Mechanic - Leading Hand 2IC

Hazeldene's is seeking an experienced Fleet Maintenance Mechanic 2IC to join our Vehicle Maintenance team at our Lockwood site. This is a hands-on mechanical role with added responsibility for supporting the day-to-day coordination of the workshop. Working closely with the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, you will help keep our transport and logistics fleet safe, reliable and operational while providing technical guidance and support to the wider workshop team. You will work across a varied fleet including trucks, trailers, forklifts, generators and refrigerated transport equipment, carrying out preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs. You will also assist with work allocation, maintenance priorities and workshop coordination and step into the supervisory role when required. This opportunity would suit an experienced mechanic who enjoys being on the tools but is also ready to take on greater responsibility and develop his leadership capability.

Key responsibilities

Support the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor with the daily coordination of workshop activities and allocation of maintenance tasks.

Perform scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance and repairs across company fleet vehicles and equipment.

Diagnose and rectify mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and basic electrical faults.

Assist in maintaining the reliability and availability of trucks, trailers, forklifts, generators and refrigerated transport equipment.

Ensure maintenance activities and repairs are accurately recorded within the maintenance management system.

Provide technical support, mentoring and guidance to junior mechanics and apprentices.

Assist with parts ordering, stock control and liaison with external suppliers.

Work closely with Logistics and Transport teams to minimise vehicle downtime and maintain operational requirements.

Maintain high standards of workplace safety, housekeeping and regulatory compliance.

Assist with improvements to workshop processes, maintenance practices, tooling and procedures.

About you

Demonstrated experience working with heavy vehicles, fleet maintenance, transport equipment or similar mechanical environments.

Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

Basic electrical fault-finding capability.

Experience with preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing.

Strong understanding of workshop safety and safe work practices.

Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing maintenance requirements.

Confidence supporting and providing technical guidance to other tradespeople and apprentices.

Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with operational teams.

Accurate record-keeping and basic computer skills for maintenance systems.
