Job summary

Mareeba Shire Council in Far North Queensland is seeking a Hands-on Heavy Diesel Fitter to service, maintain and repair the fleet of machinery across the Shire.

Based at the Mareeba workshop, you may work at different sites with occasional overnight stays; you will be home for dinner most nights. The role offers a permanent, full-time position with overtime, 5 weeks leave and 12% superannuation.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering (Heavy Diesel Fitter).
• Current Queensland MR class drivers licence or ability to obtain after commencement.
• Current High-Risk Work licence for Forklift and White Card (or National equivalent).
• Experience servicing and maintaining various plant and equipment including earthmoving machinery, trucks, light vehicles and small engines.

Responsibilities

• Hand-on role servicing, maintaining and repairing Council’s fleet to ensure safe, efficient operation.
• Work across Mareeba Shire at the workshop and at plant sites as required, with occasional overnight stays.
• Maintain compliance with safety standards and pre-employment medical requirements.

The role

As a Heavy Diesel Fitter, you will service, maintain and repair Council’s extensive and varied fleet of machinery, plant and equipment. This is a hands‑on role that contributes to making sure our machinery operates safely and efficiently and ensuring the reliability and longevity of our assets.

This role is based at Council’s workshop in Mareeba, however our plant and crews work all over the Shire, which means that you may find yourself working in different locations across the Shire when you have to go to the plant instead of the plant coming to you. You will still be home for dinner most nights, except for the odd callout or work which may require an occasional overnight stay in provided accommodation or rough camp environments.

This role will also see you working in hot and humid climates on a daily basis. You will need to be able to pass a pre-employment medical assessment and ensure that you remain physically fit and able to carry out the tasks of your role. This includes a requirement to maintain your weight below the Safe Working Load (SWL) limit for the seat of the machinery and equipment the position is required to operate.

What we are looking for

If you are a driven and skilled Heavy Diesel Fitter, with basic computer skills who works well in a team environment, we want to hear from you.

You will bring your:

• Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering (Heavy Diesel Fitter)
• Current Queensland MR class drivers licence or be able to obtain this after commencement
• Current High-Risk Work licence for Forklift and Queensland Construction Induction White Card (or National equivalent)
• Experience in servicing and maintaining various plant and equipment, including earthmoving machinery, trucks, light vehicles and small engine equipment

You will be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident or have unrestricted work rights in Australia. You must be able to provide evidence that you can legally work in Australia upon request. Mareeba Shire Council does not offer employer visa sponsorship.
