Job summary

Northern Grampians Shire Council is seeking a qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join our team in Stawell. You’ll service, maintain and repair Council’s diverse fleet, ensuring safe and reliable operation across vehicles and plant.

The role includes fault diagnosis, record keeping and scheduling preventative maintenance. The successful candidate will work independently and as part of a practical team, communicating with operators and supervisors, and providing technical input on new equipment

Qualifications

• Qualified and experienced mechanic with heavy vehicle, plant or fleet exposure.
• Ability to diagnose faults and carry out repairs across a range of vehicles and equipment.
• Organised for preventative maintenance work and planning of service schedules.
• Safety-focused and committed to high-quality workmanship.
• Able to work independently and as part of a supportive team.
• Strong communication with operators, colleagues and supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Undertake servicing, maintenance and repairs of vehicles, plant and equipment.

Northern Grampians Shire Council is seeking a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join our team in Stawell and play an important role in keeping Council’s fleet, plant and equipment safe, reliable and ready for work.

This is a hands-on role where no two days are necessarily the same. You’ll work across Council’s vehicles, plant and equipment, undertaking servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs, while helping ensure our fleet continues to support the important services we provide to our community.

About the role

As our Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, you will:

• Undertake routine servicing, maintenance and repairs of Council’s vehicles, plant and equipment.
• Diagnose and respond to faults identified through daily plant inspections and fault reports.
• Maintain accurate service and maintenance records.
• Plan and schedule preventative maintenance to maximise the reliability and life of Council’s fleet.
• Provide guidance to drivers, plant operators and other employees on routine inspections, servicing and reporting of faults.
• Identify work that may need to be undertaken by external contractors and make recommendations to the Supervisor.
• Provide technical advice and input into the assessment and purchase of new plant and equipment.
• Undertake risk assessments of new and existing plant and equipment.
• Interpret technical manuals and software to identify parts and assist with parts ordering.
• Ensure all work complies with Council requirements, relevant Australian Design Rules and VicRoads regulations.
• Work safely and correctly use all personal protective equipment provided by Council.
• Undertake other duties within your skills, competence and training as required.

About you

• A qualified and experienced mechanic, preferably with heavy vehicle, plant or fleet experience.
• Confident diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs across a range of vehicles and equipment.
• Organised and able to plan preventative maintenance effectively.
• Safety-focused and committed to high-quality workmanship.
• Comfortable working independently while also being part of a practical and supportive team.
• Able to communicate effectively with operators, colleagues, contractors and supervisors.
• Someone who takes pride in keeping equipment safe, reliable and fit for purpose.

Qualifications and experience

• Minimum Certificate III trade qualification of Mechanic plus relevant post-trade certificates.
• Experience in mechanical workshop operations and associated equipment
• Knowledge of components and operation of individual items, including a range of engines, transmissions, differential and electrical systems.
• Understanding of the technology in maintaining plant and equipment procedures and processes
• Safe and competent operation of very heavy mechanical plant.
• Ability to operate computerised inventory systems.
• Experience in standards and regulations associated with the mechanical workshop plant and fleet
• Safe use and handling of Heavy and minor plant and equipment

Selection criteria

1. Demonstrated experience in the service and repair of all types of plant and machinery, as well as small engines.
2. Demonstrated experience in the latest technology relating to a mechanical workshop, plant and fleet
3. Ability to operate effectively in a team, contributing positively to team operations and working relationships in a friendly and flexible manner.
4. Demonstrated commitment to occupational health and safety practices.
