Job summary

AGL is seeking a seasoned technology leader to head Wholesale Markets Technology in Melbourne. You will own strategy, delivery and operations for trading, risk and settlement platforms, ensuring reliability and security while advancing modern engineering.

You will build and lead a high-performing team across internal and partner-delivered models, champion DevOps, SRE, CI/CD and cloud-first approaches, and manage key vendor relationships to maximise value.

About the role

At AGL, we’re transforming how energy is generated, traded and delivered. As we work towards our ambition of adding 12GW of new renewable generation and firming by 2035, we’re looking for an exceptional technology leader to lead the platforms and teams that power our wholesale energy trading operations.

As Head of Wholesale Markets Technology, you will lead the team responsible for the delivery, operation and evolution of the technology supporting AGL’s trading, bidding, dispatch, forecasting, risk and settlement capabilities. You’ll have end-to-end accountability for ensuring these market-critical platforms are secure, resilient, high-performing and available 24/7, while driving the technology change agenda that enables our Trading, Energy Development and Energy Hubs businesses.

You’ll own the strategy, delivery and operational performance of AGL’s trading technology landscape, balancing reliability and innovation in a highly complex and fast-paced environment.

What you’ll be doing

• Leading the safe, secure and reliable operation of AGL’s wholesale energy trading platforms, ensuring they meet market, regulatory and business requirements.
• Owning the delivery of the trading technology roadmap and portfolio, partnering closely with business leaders to translate priorities into technology outcomes.
• Driving service excellence through strong operational governance, incident management, resilience planning and continuous improvement.
• Building and leading a high-performing organisation of engineering, technology and delivery leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion and innovation.
• Championing contemporary engineering practices including DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), automation, CI/CD and cloud-first approaches.
• Managing strategic vendor and partner relationships to maximise service outcomes, value and delivery performance.
• Serving as the primary technology partner to Trading, Energy Development and Energy Hubs leadership teams.
• Developing long-term technology strategies that support AGL’s growth, evolving market requirements and renewable energy ambitions.
• Partnering across Technology, Data & AI, Architecture, Cyber and Risk teams to deliver integrated, future-ready solutions.

About you

You’ll be an influential technology executive with a strong track record leading mission-critical platforms in complex, highly regulated environments.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Significant experience leading technology operations and delivery for large-scale, always-on platforms.
• Proven success running business-critical production services with a strong focus on resilience, availability and operational excellence.
• Experience supporting trading, risk, market, settlement or related platforms within energy, commodities or financial services environments.
• Strong leadership capability, including experience leading leaders and large, multidisciplinary teams across internal and partner-delivered models.
• Demonstrated success delivering complex technology programs and portfolios through agile and product-based delivery approaches.
• Strong commercial acumen and experience managing vendors, strategic partners and technology investments.
• Experience driving engineering transformation, modern ways of working and cultural change.
