Job summary

Talent in Melbourne is seeking two to three high-calibre Heads of IT Portfolio to lead the end-to-end delivery of technology initiatives across assigned business units. Responsibilities

• Partner with Business Unit leaders to shape strategic technology roadmaps.
• Manage demand, pipeline prioritisation, portfolio planning, and capacity across units.
• Develop project scopes, business cases, and funding proposals.
• Support bids and tenders with realistic technology scope and timelines.
• Initiate approved projects with clear governance, budgets and delivery frameworks.
• Lead end-to-end delivery of multiple technology initiatives.
• Provide leadership to Project Managers and technical delivery teams.
• Manage portfolio budgets, resource forecasting, dependencies, risks and delivery performance.
• Intervene to resolve delivery issues and return projects to green.
• Hold vendors and system integrators accountable for outcomes.
• Provide clear portfolio reporting to senior executives.
• Ensure governance and stage gates are followed.
• Oversee go-live and transition to operational support.
• Collaborate with the central PMO for delivery standards.

The Role

Responsibilities

• Partnering with Business Unit leaders to understand strategic priorities and shape the supporting technology roadmap
• Managing demand, pipeline prioritisation, portfolio planning, and resource capacity across assigned business units
• Developing project scopes, investment proposals, and business cases to secure funding
• Supporting commercial bids and tenders by providing realistic technology scope, estimates, delivery models, and timelines
• Initiating approved projects and establishing clear scope, governance, budgets, delivery frameworks, and success measures
• Leading the end-to-end delivery of multiple concurrent technology initiatives
• Providing leadership and direction to Project Managers and multidisciplinary technical delivery teams
• Managing portfolio budgets, resource forecasting, dependencies, risks, and delivery performance
• Actively intervening to resolve delivery issues and return challenged projects to green
• Holding vendors, system integrators and software providers accountable for contractual and delivery outcomes
• Providing clear portfolio reporting and advice to senior business and technology executives
• Ensuring projects progress through appropriate governance and delivery stage gates
• Overseeing go-live, hypercare, and the effective transition of completed initiatives into operational support
• Working closely with the central PMO to maintain consistent delivery standards and portfolio visibility.

You will also bring

• Proven ownership of enterprise technology portfolios from strategy and initiation through to operational handover.
• Experience managing portfolios comprising multiple concurrent and interdependent projects.
• Strong financial management capability, ideally overseeing technology portfolios valued at $10 million or more.
• Experience leading teams of approximately 10-20 people, including Project Managers and technical specialists.
• Demonstrated capability in demand management, pipeline governance, prioritisation and resource planning.
• Experience developing business cases, investment submissions and delivery roadmaps.
• Strong commercial experience managing vendors and different delivery arrangements, including fixed-price and time-and-materials engagements.
• The ability to build trusted relationships with senior Business Unit leaders and translate operational priorities into practical technology outcomes.
• A hands-on delivery style, with the confidence to step into challenged projects and resolve complex blockers.
• Strong executive communication, portfolio reporting and stakeholder management skills.

Nice to have

• Project or portfolio management certification such as PMP, PRINCE2, P3O
• Experience supporting technology components of major commercial bids or client-facing service contracts
• Experience operating within a federated enterprise or complex multi-business-unit environment.
