Technical Project Manager
$180,000 + Super + Bonus | Permanent | Sydney | Hybrid - 3 Days in Office
The Opportunity
We're looking for a hands-on, technically strong Project Manager to lead complex technology initiatives within an established financial services organisation. This is not a traditional governance-focused PM role. We need someone who understands technology, can hold their own in conversations with developers, testers and technical managers, and has the confidence to challenge, influence and solve problems. You'll be the sole Project Manager within the business, taking ownership of end-to-end delivery across applications, infrastructure, system migrations and technology upgrades. You'll need to be adaptable, commercially minded and comfortable getting into the detail to keep projects moving. If you're someone who takes accountability, thinks outside the box and finds solutions rather than simply escalating issues, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
What You're Doing
- Lead end-to-end technology projects from business case development and planning through to execution, implementation and operational handover.
- Manage complex technology initiatives across application upgrades, system migrations, infrastructure and platform implementations.
- Work closely with developers, testers, technical leads and technology managers to understand technical challenges, dependencies and delivery requirements.
- Apply your understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), CI/CD processes, testing, deployment and release management to drive successful delivery.
- Take ownership of project scope, schedules, budgets, resources, risks, issues and dependencies.
- Identify potential roadblocks early, develop practical solutions and work collaboratively with technical teams to resolve problems.
- Influence stakeholders at all levels, challenge assumptions constructively and drive decisions to maintain project momentum.
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise updates for senior stakeholders and business leaders.
- Coordinate internal teams, vendors and implementation partners to deliver agreed outcomes.
- Maintain appropriate project governance, financial tracking, RAID management and executive reporting without losing sight of delivery.
What We're Looking For
- Mandatory financial services experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex technology projects within banking, lending, insurance or another financial services organisation.
- Experience delivering technology projects valued at $20 million or more. You must be able to demonstrate the scale, complexity and outcomes of projects you have managed.
- Proven end-to-end project management experience, from business case and planning through to delivery, implementation and handover.
- Essential experience managing application or platform upgrades, alongside experience across system migrations and infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of SDLC, CI/CD pipelines, software development processes, testing, deployments and release management.
- Technical credibility and the ability to engage confidently with developers, testers, technical leads and technology managers.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly and explain project challenges and solutions at a high level.
- A proactive, solutions-driven mindset, with a track record of resolving issues, influencing stakeholders and making decisions rather than defaulting to escalation.
- The ability to work autonomously, adapt to changing priorities and take ownership as the sole Project Manager within the business.
- Strong stakeholder management, commercial awareness and the ability to balance technical requirements with business outcomes.
- Experience working across Agile, Waterfall or hybrid delivery environments.
- Must have PR or citizenship due to the onboarding process
This role will include an assessment of your technical capability, so you'll need to demonstrate more than traditional project management and governance experience.
You should be prepared to discuss:
- Large-scale technology projects of $20 million or more that you have personally managed.
- Application upgrades, migrations and infrastructure initiatives you have delivered.
- Your understanding of SDLC, CI/CD, testing, deployment and release processes.
- How you work with technical teams to investigate issues, challenge assumptions and develop solutions.
- Examples of managing complex delivery challenges, influencing stakeholders and driving outcomes under pressure.
We're looking for someone who can articulate their experience clearly, demonstrate genuine technical understanding and explain the full project lifecycle without getting lost in unnecessary detail.
