Job summary

Waverley College in Sydney seeks a highly skilled Head of HSIE to lead the Humanities and Social Sciences department. Reporting to the Director of Curriculum, you will coordinate curriculum across Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Geography and oversee teaching, learning and departmental staff.

You will mentor teachers, drive professional development, ensure compliant assessment, and support student wellbeing within a high-performing team.

Qualifications

• Must have curriculum development and leadership experience across HSIE subjects (Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Geography).
• Strong knowledge of AITSL standards and NSW/NESA regulatory requirements.
• Active engagement with teacher professional development and welfare of students.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and implement curriculum across HSIE subjects.
• Oversee teaching and learning practices within the department.
• Lead mentoring, coaching and professional development for staff.
• Ensure assessment and reporting align with NESA standards and college policy.
• Communicate with College Leadership Team and manage the departmental budget.
• Support student wellbeing and liaise with pastoral care teams.

Waverley College, established in 1903, is a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition catering for boys from Years 5-12 across two campuses in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. The College is committed to developing innovative learning, formation and wellbeing programs that enable young men to flourish across their spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional, cultural, and physical dimensions.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Curriculum, The Head of HSIE is responsible for coordinating and implementing all facets of Curriculum across Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Commerce & Geography. The Head of HSIE oversees the teaching and learning practices of the department and of all departmental staff acting as a representative point of communication with the College Leadership Team

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing subject related curriculum and ensures the correct delivery of curriculum.
• Developing, implementing and evaluating teaching programs to meet Syllabus outcomes
• Ensuring Assessment programs and the conduct of Assessment tasks comply with NESA
• and College Policy
• Consulting with the Director of Business Services and the Director of Curriculum to formulate and manage
• the departmental budget
• Overseeing and managing the day-to-day activities of departmental staff, including wellbeing
• and pastoral care
• Providing mentoring, coaching and professional development to staff
• Ensuring that the care and welfare of students is always promoted
• Supporting students by liaising with Heads of House, the Learning Support Department and the Senior Studies & Careers Coordinator

Requirements:

• Loyalty to the ethos of the College and the Edmund Rice Charter and will demonstrably enact College Policies and support the College Leadership Team and Principal
• Be accredited at NESA’s Proficient Teacher Level 5
• Possess High level subject knowledge & In-depth and demonstrable knowledge of the AITSL standards
• Maintain Current Teacher Registration
• Keep abreast of statutory requirements in curriculum expressed by NESA and other professional bodies.
• Hold currency with specific subject teaching trends, best practice and the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) regulations and expectations
• Possess high computer literacy in a Mac environment
