Job summary

Inner West Council invites applications for a Governance Officer role, supporting policy development, statutory compliance, information access requests and internal audit activities. You will help organise meetings and manage governance workflows.

Successful applicants will engage with a wide range of stakeholders while upholding the council values and contributing to continuous improvement and good governance across the organisation.

Join a team that plays a vital role in supporting good governance, transparency and accountability across Council. This varied role offers the opportunity to work across policy, compliance, information access, audit and governance projects while building strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation.

You’ll be involved in everything from coordinating key Council and leadership meetings to supporting policy development, statutory compliance, information access requests and internal audit activities. It’s an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, collaboration and making a meaningful contribution to Council’s effectiveness and continuous improvement.

Please note that opportunities are available for two (2) permanent positions and two (2) temporary positions up to September 2028.

$85,842.12 - $94,968.64 + 12% Superannuation

Some of the required skills, experience and qualifications

  • Experience in government administration or a similar role, or the ability to quickly develop capabilities in government administration.
  • Experience in at least one of the following: working in a secretariat or administrative role involving regular production of meeting papers and minutes for boards/committees and providing in-meeting support, statutory interpretation, compliance management, internal audit, policy development, and dealing with information access applications within a complex legislative framework.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of at least one of the Local Government Act 1993, Local Government (General) Regulations 2021, Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009, Office of Local Government Model Codes/Policies/Best Practice Guidance, and relevant/associated regulations.
  • Governance Officer: Ability to implement at least one of the following: governance, compliance, policy development, internal audit, and/or information access initiatives and workstreams, with close supervision.
  • Sound interpersonal and negotiation skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
