Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a Head of Detection & Response in Sydney to lead security engineering across incident detection, response, threat intelligence, and security operations for cloud-first environments. You will drive a global strategy, oversee a multi-region team, and ensure rapid containment, eradication, and recovery with durable fixes.

The role emphasizes executive communication, regulatory readiness, and collaboration with product security, governance, and data platforms.

Qualifications

• 15+ years in security with 7+ years leading multi-region detection/response or SOC/IR in large-scale cloud-first companies.
• Proven success handling high-severity incidents end to end with executive/customer communications and regulatory readiness.
• Depth in cloud platforms, identity, modern endpoint/EDR, data security, CI/CD security, and SaaS telemetry integration.
• Track record deploying automation (SOAR) with measurable MTTD/MTTR improvements and KPIs/SLOs.
• Experience leading intel fusion or threat hunting; integrating ATT&CK, diamond model, and purple-team outcomes.
• Privacy-by-design, secure AI usage, and evaluation frameworks for ML/LLM detection use cases.
• Executive presence with board-level communication experience; ability to simplify incidents into actionable decisions.

Responsibilities

• Own global detection and response strategy, roadmap, and investment plan linked to business risk and customer trust.
• Lead multi-region organization across time zones; build leadership bench and succession plan.
• Establish governance with clear OKRs, SLOs, and executive dashboards for visibility.
• Scale cloud-native detections across identity, data, endpoints, CI/CD, containers, and SaaS.
• Reduce false positives via quality gates, purple-teaming, and regression testing pipelines.
• Operate IR with 24x7 coverage, incident management, exec comms, and regulatory readiness.
• Drive automation and playbooks for containment, eradication, and recovery; post-incident reviews.
• Build intel fusion capability translating signals into detections and controls.
• Run threat hunting focused on Atlassian-specific TTPs and measurable findings-to-detection conversion.
• Partner with Trust Engineering to evolve data platform; ensure telemetry and lineage for detections.
• Leverage ML/LLM-assisted detections with human-in-the-loop controls.
• Align with Product and Corporate Security to close systemic risks and meet audits.
• Represent DnR in executive forums, customer escalations, and external audits.
