Job summary

Newmont is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to deliver geotechnical engineering support for underground mining operations and ensure compliance with site ground control standards across the Tanami operation.

You will undertake inspections, develop designs for stopes and backfill, and apply rock mechanics and numerical modeling to optimise stability. Strong reporting and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Degree in Geotechnical/Mining/Engineering Geology or related field.
• Experience in underground geotechnical engineering in hard rock mining.
• Strong understanding of rock mechanics, ground control and excavation stability.
• Experience in stope design and ground support design and assessment.
• Proficiency with geotechnical software Rocscience, Deswik and MDM or similar.
• Experience with numerical modelling tools MAP3D, FLAC3D or StopeX.
• Seismic monitoring/interpretation tools (IMS or mXrap) helpful.
• Geotechnical monitoring systems and LiDAR data analysis experience.
• Clear technical reporting and stakeholder communication.
• Full and unrestricted eligibility to work in Australia.

Responsibilities

• Undertake geotechnical inspections, mapping and data collection to assess ground conditions and risk.
• Develop, review and approve geotechnical designs for stopes, development and backfill.
• Apply rock mechanics and numerical methods to optimise mine design and stability.
• Interpret geotechnical and seismic data to support operational decisions.
• Conduct risk assessments and recommend proper controls for ground hazards.
• Monitor stope performance and reconcile design with actual outcomes for improvement.
• Investigate geotechnical incidents and provide technical recommendations.
• Maintain geotechnical databases, monitoring systems and reports for planning.
• Collaborate with Mining, Planning and Technical Services to integrate geotechnical considerations into plans.
