Job summary

Aquila Mine, located near Middlemount in Queensland, Australia, is part of Anglo American. We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join a high‑performing technical team and support safe, sustainable extraction of premium steelmaking coal.

Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent, you will design ground support, audit underground strata, and advise on geotechnical issues to maximise value while complying with safety and environmental standards.

Qualifications

• Tertiary degree in Geotechnical Engineering or similar discipline.
• Proven underground coal experience within a Geotechnical Engineering role.
• Experience with computer aided mine design programs, geotechnical software, and other business software.
• Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) would be highly advantageous or willingness to obtain recognition.
• Ability to understand functionality of business systems and provide data for business purposes.

Responsibilities

• Maintain geotechnical oversight of underground operations and audit compliance with corporate standards and approved design.
• Design ground support and monitoring systems to support safe and productive mine operations.
• Conduct regular underground inspections to audit installed strata support and conditions per approved designs.
• Provide strategic advice to Technical Services and Mining Operations on maximizing operation value.
• Advise management and operational staff on geotechnical issues.
• Manage the Strata Defect System and ensure compliance with the Geotechnical Operational Management System.
• Advise engineers on geotechnical and hydro-geological issues regarding mine design, planning and operations.
• Understand and comply with safety, health, environment, cost and production objectives and procedures.
• Provide mentoring and training on strata support systems.
