Job summary

Coates Hire is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Technician at our Cambridge branch in Hobart. You will service and overhaul a variety of hire equipment, diagnose faults, and ensure documented maintenance meets safety and quality standards.

Join a supportive team in a modern workshop with a stable roster and ongoing opportunities across the region. A current MR/HR license and relevant trades are preferred, with overtime penalties and above‑award rates.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification in mechanical, diesel or plant mechanics.
• Current Driver’s Licence (MR or HR preferred).
• Experience with petrol and diesel engines, hydraulics and pneumatics.
• Safety‑first mindset and commitment to quality workmanship.

Responsibilities

• Performing preventative maintenance, servicing and overhauls on a wide range of hire equipment.
• Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults efficiently and safely.
• Completing and maintaining accurate service and repair records.
• Working proactively to minimise operational downtime.
• Ensuring all work complies with Coates safety and quality standards.
• Close collaboration with operations, service and customer‑facing teams to support equipment availability and a high level of customer satisfaction.

Job description

Here’s how you’ll be a part of our team

• Above award hourly rates + overtime penalty rates
• Monday to Friday roster with 7.6 hours worked between 7:00am and 5:00pm
• Permanent full-time position

Based at the Coates Cambridge branch, you’ll play a key role in keeping our hire fleet safe, reliable and ready for customers. This is a hands‑on mechanical role suited to someone who enjoys variety, teamwork and taking pride in maintaining high‑performing equipment.

What you’ll bring to the role

• Relevant trade qualifications (e.g. Mechanical, Diesel, Plant Mechanic)
• Experience with:
• Petrol and diesel engines
• Hydraulics and pneumatics
• Basic electrical fault finding
• Current Driver’s Licence (MR or HR preferred)
• Forklift and EWP tickets (beneficial, not essential)
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic and preventative maintenance skills
• A safety‑first mindset and a commitment to quality work
