Job summary

There are growth stories and then there are the ones that rewrite what growth actually means. This business arrived in Australia with a single product and a dealer network still being built. Within three years it had become one of the top ten brands in the country. Within four it was running second in the national market, the closest any brand has come to the top in a very long time.

That trajectory has consequences for finance. Volume arrives unevenly, results move significantly from one month to the next, and the numbers have to be trusted at exactly the moment they are hardest to read. The business operates as part of a joint venture held within one of Australia's largest and most well-known ASX-listed groups, which means the governance, capital and reporting standards of a listed corporate sit behind the pace and ambition of a business that is still being shaped around its own growth.

The finance function is now being built to match. That is why this role exists.

The Role

This is a newly created seat. The Financial Controller role has been created because the function has outgrown the structure that built it, not because somebody left. You are not inheriting somebody else's version of this job. You are shaping the financial control function for a national dealership network at one of the most consequential moments in its history.

Reporting to the General Manager Finance, you will own the integrity of the general ledger and the month end close across a national network, lead the financial control framework and deliver statutory reporting, while leading five direct reports and a total team of 20 spanning the transactional accounting and administration functions. It is a genuine leadership seat, not a senior accountant with a bigger title.

The General Manager Finance you report to is a Chartered Accountant with a legal background who has run a listed group finance function of 60 people, refinanced hundreds of millions in syndicated debt and served as Acting Group CFO. He leads by trust rather than supervision, invests real time in developing the right people and is consistently described by his own direct reports as a great leader. At this level, that is the detail that matters most.

Three things count above all else in this hire, and they are in order. First, leadership and management done properly: the ability to delegate, follow through, set clear expectations and hold people to account across a team of 20, much of which you will lead through your direct reports. Second, technical accounting foundations built in Big 4 or large mid-tier audit, then taken into a large commercial environment. Third, the intelligence and learning agility to operate inside a business where nothing is fully settled and the ground can move quickly.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

Owning the integrity of the general ledger and the month end close across a national dealership network

Leading the financial control framework including balance sheet reconciliations, controls and the close timetable

Delivering statutory reporting and managing the external audit relationship

Managing tax compliance obligations including BAS, GST and FBT alongside the group function

Leading, developing and holding to account five direct reports and a total team of 20 across the transactional accounting and administration functions

Running the transactional accounting team covering payables, receivables and the processes around them

Running the administration team that supports the finance function

Partnering with the finance analytics function so the business gets numbers it can act on

Building and documenting process in a function still being shaped around the growth

Supporting the General Manager Finance on the projects that come with a business scaling at this pace

About You

You are a Financial Controller who is ready to own a function outright and has the leadership maturity to run a team of 20 without reverting to doing the work yourself when the pressure is on. You set clear expectations at the start, delegate properly and follow through to completion. Accountability is something you manage actively, not something you hope for.

Your technical foundations were laid in Big 4 or large mid-tier audit, and you have since taken that rigour into a large company commercial environment where you have owned a set of books at scale rather than audited someone else's. You know what good control looks like because you have built it, not just reviewed it. You are CA or CPA qualified.

You are also someone who picks things up quickly and applies them well with imperfect information. The General Manager Finance will invest real time in your development. What that investment cannot substitute for is the raw ability to learn fast and adjust when the environment changes, which in this business it will.

To be effective in this role, you will likely bring:

Proven Financial Controller experience with ownership of month end close, financial control frameworks and statutory reporting

Big 4 or large mid-tier audit foundations, followed by substantial commercial experience in a large and complex business

Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and hold to account a sizeable finance team including through direct reports

Strong technical accounting capability across general ledger integrity, balance sheet reconciliations and tax compliance

Experience building and improving processes in a growing or evolving finance function

CA or CPA qualified

The learning agility and composure to operate effectively in a fast-moving, high-volume environment where the numbers shift significantly from month to month
