O'Brien Civil is seeking a Finance Manager to lead a small finance team and own the day-to-day financial operations across Western Australia. You will report to the General Manager and partner with Directors, Project Managers and the Contract Administration team to deliver accurate financial information and practical commercial advice for project decisions.
This hybrid role offers office and home-based work with flexibility to balance business needs and candidate preferences.
As Finance Manager, you will lead a small finance team and oversee the company's day-to-day financial operations. You will have end-to-end ownership of O'Brien Civil's finance function and be accountable for accurate, timely and commercially useful financial information. Reporting to the General Manager and working closely with the Directors, Project Managers and Contract Administration team, you will provide accurate financial reporting, commercial insight and practical advice to support sound business and project decisions. You will act as a commercial finance partner to project teams, helping translate financial information into practical actions, identify risks and opportunities, and improve project and business performance. This is a flexible, hybrid role offering the opportunity to work both from our office and from home. Key responsibilities
Own the finance function end to end and be the primary point of contact for finance and accounting matters
Lead, support and review the work of the payroll and accounts payable team, with clear responsibilities, deadlines and quality standards
Maintain accurate, current accounting records, effective internal controls and disciplined month-end processes
Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow reports for the General Manager and Directors
Oversee the preparation and issue of client invoices from approved claims and certificates, accurately and on time
Monitor debtors, follow up overdue accounts and report aged receivables to the General Manager
Oversee supplier and subcontractor invoice processing, including matching to purchase orders, subcontract values and approvals
Review, approve and reconcile each pay run prepared by the Payroll Officer
Maintain a reliable rolling cash flow forecast, including a short-term 13-week view, and advise the General Manager and Directors of funding needs or cash risks early
Prepare and lodge BAS, and manage GST, PAYG and FBT obligations.
About you
Bachelor's degree in accounting, commerce or business, or equivalent relevant professional experience
CPA or CA qualification, or actively working towards qualification
Minimum 7 years' finance/accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end, management reporting and financial control
Experience in construction, civil contracting, mining services or another project-based contracting environment, including progress claims, retentions, job costing, work in progress and cost to complete
Experience preparing profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow reports for owners, directors or senior management
Strong working knowledge of BAS, GST, PAYG, superannuation, payroll tax and FBT
Experience dealing directly with banks, external accountants, auditors and the ATO
Advanced Microsoft Excel and accounting/job costing software skills
Experience or working knowledge of MYOB Advanced, TRAILD, TimeSite Pro, Velixo and Xero is highly desirable.
Experience supervising a small finance/accounts team and setting clear quality and deadline expectations
Takes ownership and accountability, is highly accurate, organised and deadline-focused, has strong financial integrity and discretion
