Job description

About McMahon Services

At McMahon Services, we are committed to delivering excellence across Australia. We value our people, foster innovation, and provide opportunities for professional growth. Join us and contribute to projects that create lasting positive change in the regions in which we operate.

About The Role

Step into a critical role at the heart of our Environmental Services stream. As Finance Manager, you’ll be the financial conscience of our project teams, a trusted partner who works closely with them to understand project performance and see what the numbers are really saying. You’ll dive into the detail alongside busy project managers to understand where each project sits financially and how we can best manage it, with accurate month-end reporting and early identification of risks and trends at the core of the role.

As our larger customers manage their contracts more assertively, we need someone on our side who can genuinely support our people and strengthen their commercial discipline. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust at every level are essential. An accounting background with project controls experience is key, making this a fantastic step up for a finance professional ready to make a real impact. Tertiary qualifications are preferred. If you’re a collaborative communicator who thrives on supporting people as well as the figures, we’d love to hear from you.

What You Will Do
  • Be the financial conscience of our project teams - getting close to project performance, reviewing the numbers and digging in with project managers to understand where each project sits and how we manage it.
  • Own the month-end reporting process, making sure projects report on time, accruals are accurate and reports to senior leaders and the wider business can be relied on.
  • Spot emerging risks and trends early, raising them with senior leaders along with clear recommendations on cost tracking, revenue recognition and margin.
  • Coach and support our project managers to strengthen their commercial and financial discipline, helping teams get ahead of issues before they arise.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and identify cost‑saving opportunities, directing the Financial Analyst on deep dives into performance across the stream.
  • Build strong relationships with Executive General Managers, Group Finance and stakeholders across the business while improving our financial processes and systems.
What You Will Bring
  • An accounting background with experience in a project controls or similar finance role in a construction, infrastructure or project-based environment (2-3+ years in a similar position).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively, build trust quickly and work alongside busy project teams.
  • Strong analytical skills and a high attention to detail, with the ability to read the numbers, see what's wrong and explain it clearly.
  • Proven ability to deliver accurate reporting to tight month-end deadlines and manage competing priorities in a calm, professional manner.
  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, finance, business or a related field are preferred.
  • A current driver's licence and the ability to obtain DCSI and Defence clearance.
What Will Set You Apart
  • Experience supporting project managers to lift their commercial and financial discipline in a construction or contracting environment.
  • Proficiency in ERP and project platforms such as Pronto, SAP, Oracle, InEight, Aconex, Procore or Power BI.
  • A track record of improving financial processes, systems and reporting.
  • Confidence presenting financial performance to senior leaders and building relationships across business streams.
  • You don't need to tick every box on paper - great people skills, a sharp eye for the numbers and a drive to keep learning will take you a long way.
Why Join McMahon Services?
  • Competitive salary, benefits and career growth opportunities.
  • Employee discounts, recognition and financial wellness programs.
  • Access to our in-house MAC Learning Academy for ongoing career development.
  • Strong commitment to safety and well-being.
  • A culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

At McMahon Services, we embrace diversity and inclusion as fundamental values. We believe that a diverse workforce fosters innovation, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the communities we serve. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents.
