Job description

Environmental Officer

Keep our processing plant compliant and drive practical environmental improvements.

About Us

Stanbroke is a reputable family-owned and operated Australian cattle and beef business. Our operations span across Northern Queensland with extensive cattle properties, backgrounding operations in Southern Queensland, state-of-the‑art feedlots, a fully accredited beef processing facility and global marketing capabilities. We produce a full range of Grain and Grass‑fed beef categories and export to over 40 countries worldwide.

Your role

Stanbroke is looking for an Environment Officer to join our processing plant team. Reporting to the Plant Manager, you will be responsible for keeping our abattoir compliant with its Environmental Authority. This is a hands‑on, site‑based role focused on monitoring, sampling, record‑keeping and reporting. You will work closely with our engineering, maintenance, farming and plant management teams to manage environmental risk, prevent pollution and improve how we operate.

You will carry out the inspections required under our Environmental Authority, keep records audit‑ready, prepare annual environmental reports and act as the site contact for environmental regulators. Day to day, you will monitor wastewater and leachate ponds, sample the human wastewater treatment plant, prevent pond overflows and manage irrigation, stormwater and trade waste. Your fieldwork will include collecting soil and groundwater samples, monitoring soil moisture and recording irrigation volumes and crop yields.

You will oversee paunch and compost operations, record waste volumes, make sure waste is disposed of correctly and support pest control.

Beyond daily compliance, you will track water, power, gas and waste data and look for efficiency opportunities such as water recycling and biogas. When spills or leaks occur, you will respond, notify regulators within required timeframes and contribute to investigations and corrective actions. You will also help develop environmental management plans and procedures, train staff, provide environmental input on new projects, and develop and run an environmental auditing and inspection program.

What you’ll bring

Working knowledge of Queensland environmental legislation, including the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld) and Environmental Authority conditions for meat processing. An understanding of wastewater, irrigation, stormwater and trade waste management, soil and groundwater sampling and monitoring requirements, waste, compost and odour management in an abattoir or similar processing environment, and environmental incident notification and reporting obligations.

Accuracy in the field and with your records, along with the ability to analyse data, report on trends and write clear, concise reports for regulators, auditors and management. Strong communication with staff, regulators and community members, and the ability to train and coach others. The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, stay calm during incidents, handle complaints fairly and bring practical, cost‑effective ideas to the table.
