Job summary

Thales Australia seeks an Electronics Engineer to maintain and support Scylla sonar equipment within the Under Water Systems sector. You will contribute to design, testing and documentation, while supporting continuous improvement across Lean processes and manufacturing.

Role requires an IEAust accredited degree and hands-on experience in high-quality equipment, with readiness to work in a team of engineers, technicians, and production staff. Defence clearance may be required.

Qualifications

  • IEAust recognised Electrical / Electronics Engineering degree able to meet Engineers Australia membership.
  • Circuit board design, electronics modules, racks/cabinet cabling.
  • Knowledge of design, manufacture, verification and configuration processes.
  • Minimum 3 years hands-on experience in high-quality equipment or systems.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and maintain equipment and systems to appropriate specifications.
  • Design new components or test fixtures for equipment and systems.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis on site or for returned components.
  • Maintain design, calculations, drawings, test plans and BOMs with high quality documentation.
  • Ensure quality and configuration control of produced data and participate in design reviews.

The Electronics Engineer role will be part of a diverse team of engineers, technicians, production staff and management supporting the Undersea Warfare business sector of Under Water Systems in Australia. Specifically, performing engineering related tasks to maintain and support the Scylla sonars and associated equipment and systems.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As an Electronics Engineer, you are accountable for:
  • Deliver and maintain equipment and systems including engineering calculations, developing assembly, repair and test techniques, sourcing of alternates to obsolete parts and materials, and testing to appropriate engineering specifications.
  • The design of new components for equipment and systems or test fixtures.
  • Undertaking Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on location or on components returned from site.
  • Creating, reviewing and maintaining design and manufacturing documentation such as: specifications, compliance matrices, design calculations, analysis reports, drawings, test plans, test reports, routing cards and BOMs.
  • Documenting all engineering support and investigation work to a high standard and utilising the peer review process.
  • Ensuring the quality and configuration control of produced design, manufacturing and test data.
  • Participating in design reviews, test readiness reviews and production readiness reviews.
  • Providing technical advice to members of relevant teams, seeking Design Authority (DA) approval where required.
  • Developing and maintaining clear plans for assigned work packages, including routine status reporting and revised estimates to complete.
  • Proactively participating in the continuous improvement of Lean systems and processes within the Engineering group.
  • Acquiring and maintaining technical knowledge across all the Scylla subsystems, including the outboard and inboard components, associated maintenance / test equipment and manufacturing processes.
KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:
  • IEAust recognised Electrical / Electronics Engineering degree able to meet the requirements for Professional membership of Engineers Australia.
  • Circuit board, electronic module or rack / cabinet and cabling design.
  • Knowledge of the engineering design, manufacture, verification and configuration processes.
  • Minimum 3 years experience working ‘hands on’ as part of a team to manufacture and/or support high quality technical equipment or systems.
  • Must have a flexible attitude, be willing to develop new skills and work as part of a team.
  • Good initiative, self-management and planning skills.
GOOD TO KNOW

Prior to being offered employment, you will need to complete pre-employment police and (role dependent) medical checks. A Defence security clearance is required for this role; applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an appropriate clearance.
