Job summary

The Department of Education Victoria seeks a Welfare Officer at the SELC hosted within St Georges Road Primary School in Shepparton to provide comprehensive welfare support to students, addressing homesickness, wellbeing, and behavioural challenges with restorative approaches.

You will work with teachers and external services to establish pathways for referrals, run group sessions, and help families access support, ensuring an inclusive, safe learning environment for diverse students.

Qualifications

• An EAL teaching qualification recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (preferred).
• At least 5 years of teaching experience in EAL (preferred).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with diverse groups.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities.
• Knowledge of disability inclusion policies and practices.
• Empathy, compassion and commitment to student and staff wellbeing.

Responsibilities

• Provide individual student welfare support for homesickness, academic stress and cultural adjustment.
• Maintain regular contact with students to monitor progress and wellbeing.
• Facilitate group wellbeing sessions and restorative practice aimed at improving student outcomes.
• Support students with behavioural or discipline issues by addressing underlying social and family factors.
• Build staff capacity in mental health, wellbeing and inclusion across the school community.
• Establish clear referral pathways to external services when needed.
• Engage with families and local organisations to support student needs.
• Coordinate with SELC Co-ordinator and host school for program delivery.
