Job summary

Metallum Fabrication Pty Ltd – St Marys NSW is seeking an experienced Draftsman / Designer to join our Western Sydney team. The role focuses on turning architectural and structural drawings into production-ready fabrication drawings and 3D models for metal fabrication projects.

Excellent knowledge of sheet metal, bend development, laser cutting and fabrication constraints is essential. You will work closely with production, estimating and project teams to ensure accurate, manufacturable designs

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years drafting/design experience in metal fabrication or manufacturing.
• Proficient 3D modelling and sheet metal design.
• Able to translate drawings into production-ready fabrication drawings and 3D models.
• Understanding of bend development, allowances and fabrication constraints.
• Experience with laser cutting, welding and fabrication processes.

Responsibilities

• Take projects from architectural, structural and engineering drawings through to production-ready fabrication drawings and 3D models.
• Produce workshop, fabrication and assembly drawings with attention to manufacturing constraints.
• Work with production, estimating and project teams to ensure accuracy and deadlines.
• Interpret drawings, prepare BOMs, and perform material take-offs.
• Collaborate on optimization of fabrication processes and tooling requirements.

DRAFTSMAN / DESIGNER – METAL FABRICATION

Metallum Heavy Industries is seeking an experienced Draftsman / Designer to join our team in Western Sydney.

We are an established Australian metal fabrication and manufacturing business delivering a diverse range of projects across structural steel, sheet metal, architectural fabrication and custom metalwork.

The Role

This is a hands‑on design and drafting role for someone who understands not only how to produce accurate drawings, but how those drawings translate into fabrication on the workshop floor.

You will take projects from architectural, structural and engineering drawings, sketches and concepts through to detailed, production‑ready fabrication drawings and 3D models.

Working closely with our production, estimating and project teams, you will ensure designs are accurate, practical, efficient to manufacture and ready for fabrication.

Key Skills & Experience

• Minimum 3 years’ drafting/design experience, preferably within metal fabrication or manufacturing
• Excellent 3D modelling capabilities
• Demonstrated sheet metal design and drafting experience
• Bend development and flat-pattern creation
• Sound understanding of press brake bending, bend allowances and fabrication constraints
• Ability to prepare laser‑cutting and fabrication‑ready drawings
• Structural steel and general metal fabrication knowledge
• Ability to produce detailed workshop, fabrication and assembly drawings
• Good understanding of welding, fabrication processes and manufacturing tolerances
• Ability to interpret architectural, structural and engineering drawings
• BOM preparation and material take-offs
• Ability to work directly with production, estimating and project teams
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone with real‑world metal fabrication knowledge — not simply CAD experience.

You should understand how components are actually cut, laser cut, folded, welded, fitted and assembled, and be able to design and detail with the manufacturing process in mind.

You will work closely with our workshop and production teams, so the ability to communicate effectively and resolve practical fabrication issues is important.
