Job description

Overview

Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future.

Downer Professional Services comprises three business units: our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer, which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence. We are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security.

We currently have an opportunity for Linux Engineers in Canberra to work on Deployed ICT projects.

What You’ll Do

This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including:

  • Design and integration of HQOTM MPE nodes, including documenting system architecture and reviewing interfacing system designs.
  • Develop, maintain, and integrate software components, including automation of installation processes.
  • Build, administer, and provide level-three support for production HQOTM MPE nodes to ensure operational stability.
  • Maintain configuration control and system baselines, including software lists, SOPs, BLIs, and patch management plans.
  • Deliver knowledge transfer and training support, contributing to training materials and upskilling support personnel.
What You’ll Bring
  • Linux engineering expertise — developing software, customising/administering servers, hardening operating systems, and maintaining Linux SOE images.
  • Automation and scripting capability — automating installations, customised applications, and developing scripts (including Ansible as a desirable skill).
  • Technical documentation and DevOps experience — producing clear documentation and working within DevOps methodologies.
  • Ability to provide informed technical advice — grounding recommendations in broader business and operational requirements.
  • Desirable Defence-aligned and systems knowledge — CIS experience, systems engineering understanding, Defence Capability Lifecycle awareness, Agile delivery, OpenStack, and Windows SOE management.

Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 2 or higher Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.

More than anything, you’ll bring a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes for our clients.
