Overview

Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future. Downer Professional Services comprises three business units: our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer, which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence. Together, we are a multi-disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security.

We currently have an opportunity for a Systems Generalist Engineer in Canberra to work on Deployed ICT projects.

What You’ll Do

Responsibilities

• Level 3 technical support — diagnosing incidents, replicating faults, and resolving issues across HQOTM nodes and production environments.
• System monitoring and configuration control — ensuring compliance, maintaining baselines, and administering support and development environments.
• HQOTM node build and enhancement — supporting node builds, updates, upgrades, and contributing to new features and functionality.
• Documentation and training development — reviewing documentation, developing SOPs/BLIs, creating training materials, and transferring knowledge to support personnel.
• Operational and surge support — providing additional on-site support when required and performing other duties as directed.

What You’ll Bring

• Cross-platform system administration expertise — configuring and managing Linux and Windows servers, applications, and deployed systems.
• Documentation and governance capability — developing and maintaining SOPs, BLIs, and other technical documentation.
• DevOps and automation skills — experience with DevOps practices, scripting, automation, and tools such as Ansible, Git, Python, PowerShell, and UNIX shells.
• Technical advisory grounded in business needs — providing sound technical advice aligned with broader organisational and operational requirements.
• Collaborative mindset and growth orientation — strong teamwork skills, adaptability, and willingness to learn and expand capability.

Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 2 or higher Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
