Job summary

Task Recruitment in Brisbane CBD is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to move beyond dashboards and build data‑driven applications within a global mining technology organisation. You will apply data science, SQL, analytics and ML to develop data pipelines, predictive models and commercial technical applications, using LLMs and tools such as Semantic Kernel.

A minimum of 5 years of commercial experience is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ relevant commercial experience in data science, data engineering, software/application development or related field.
• Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, incl. ETL development, CDC and Change Tracking.
• Experience with large, complex datasets and developing commercial applications.
• Knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, Python, R or Java.
• Experience designing data pipelines and data architecture; data modelling and analytics techniques.
• Hands-on with data-driven analytics solutions and machine learning methods.

Are you an experienced Data Scientist who enjoys going beyond dashboards and reporting to build sophisticated, data-driven applications? Join a global mining technology organisation whose solutions help mining companies design, plan, optimise, simulate and economically manage their operations.

This is a permanent opportunity within a multidisciplinary Technology and Development team, combining data science, advanced SQL, data engineering, analytics, machine learning and application development.

You’ll work with large and complex datasets to build data systems, pipelines, analytical tools, algorithms and commercial technical applications. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with large language models (LLMs) and emerging AI technologies, including tools such as Semantic Kernel. We’re looking for someone with at least 5 years’ relevant commercial experience who combines strong data science fundamentals with hands‑on technical and application development capability.

What You’ll Be Working On

This is a hands‑on technical role where you’ll use data to solve complex commercial and engineering problems.

You’ll work across the lifecycle of data – from bringing together raw information from multiple sources through to developing data pipelines, analytical solutions, predictive models and applications that turn that information into something genuinely useful.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Analysing and organising large volumes of raw and complex data
• Building and maintaining data systems and pipelines
• Translating business requirements into reporting, analysis and technical specifications
• Combining information from multiple data sources
• Preparing data for predictive and prescriptive modelling
• Developing algorithms, prototypes, analytical tools and programs
• Designing high-quality data architecture and data solutions
• Exploring ways to improve data quality, reliability and performance
• Developing data-driven commercial engineering and technical applications
• Working extensively with Microsoft SQL Server
• Developing and maintaining ETL processes
• Performing SQL query performance tuning
• Working with Change Data Capture (CDC) and Change Tracking
• Applying data science, statistical and machine learning techniques to complex problems
• Working with LLMs and AI technologies, including tools such as Semantic Kernel
• Developing and maintaining technical process and procedure documentation
• Collaborating with software development, engineering, technical and business stakeholders
• Contributing to advanced technical support and Level 3 triage when required

About You

We’re looking for someone who has built things with data. You’ll have a strong data science and analytics foundation, but importantly, you'll also have experience developing applications and solutions that use large and complex datasets.

You’ll ideally bring:

• Minimum 5 years’ relevant commercial experience in data science, data engineering, software/application development or a closely related field
• Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including:
  • ETL development
  • Query performance tuning
  • Change Data Capture (CDC)
  • Change Tracking
• Hands‑on experience working with large and complex datasets
• Proven experience developing commercial applications
• Experience developing engineering, technical or data-intensive applications
• Knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, Python, R or Java
• Strong SQL database design skills
• Experience with data modelling, data mining and segmentation techniques
• Experience designing and developing data pipelines and data architecture
• Knowledge of machine learning and statistical techniques
• Experience designing analytics solutions
• Power BI development experience
• Experience with SSRS, reporting and data manipulation
• Hands‑on experience with large language models (LLMs)
• Exposure to AI development tools/frameworks such as Semantic Kernel
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving capability
• Excellent attention to detail, communication and organisational skills

Highly Regarded

Experience within mining technology, mining software or another engineering-intensive industry would be particularly valuable.

A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline is preferred, with postgraduate qualifications considered advantageous.
