Job summary

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) is recruiting a Data Scientist within the Participants Supervision team in Sydney. You will model participant activity data, build data-driven automations and dashboards to uplift monitoring and regulatory reporting, and help protect market integrity.

The role sits in a dedicated TOP team focused on risk, processes, and data, offering hybrid working options. You will collaborate across stakeholders, deliver data products, and push continuous improvement

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in a technical discipline such as computer science, data science, statistics, applied mathematics
• 2+ years' experience as data analyst or data scientist
• Strong Python, SQL and Excel skills
• Cloud platforms experience (AWS/Azure/GCP)
• Experience with data viz tools (PowerBI/Tableau/Tibco Spotfire)
• Experience in statistical modelling, ML or NLP
• Ability to present data clearly to non-technical stakeholders
• Curiosity, problem solving and continuous improvement mindset
• Detail oriented with accuracy and narrative data storytelling
• Ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders and manage priorities

About the team:

As a Data Scientist within Participants Supervision, you will apply hands‑on data science approaches to model data on participant activity across ASX's markets and clearing and settlement facilities to help protect the integrity and reputation of those markets and facilities. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of the function through the delivery of data‑driven automations and solutions to uplift the operational processes and monitoring activities of the function to support key licence obligations.

ASX Supervision is the division responsible for the supervision of market participants and issuers listed on the exchange and is at the front line of ASX's core license obligations to monitor and enforce the market's operating rules that helps maintain a fair, orderly, transparent and efficient market‑protecting not only the interests of investors but also the reputation of Australia's financial system as a whole. Within the division, the Transformation and Operational Performance (TOP) team is a multi‑disciplinary team of risk, process, systems, and data professionals that collectively enables the ASX Supervision division to achieve its strategic outcomes. The TOP team is responsible for designing, implementing and embedding continuous improvements to its operational and risk management practices.

What you will be doing:

• Work alongside members of ASX Supervision to understand pain points, process improvement opportunities using data analytics and deliver data analytics solutions to a wide variety of business problems.
• Develop a deep understanding of the financial markets including clearing and settlement facilities, participant systems, operations and connectivity models, and the Operating Rules and an understanding of their application
• Perform data analysis to identify trends and patterns, and present findings to non-technical stakeholders to support management decision-making and assist the function with monitoring and enforcing the Operating Rules
• Design, develop and maintain various data products including dashboards, automated reports and monitoring tools to support the work of the wider ASX Supervision function.
• Collaborate cross-functionally across ASX with stakeholders and project teams to discover and source data, understand business processes, gather requirements and deliver analytics solutions that meet the requirements of ASX Supervision
• Prepare timely and high-quality reports for executive, board, management and regulatory submissions
• Maintain good record-keeping, documentation and knowledge of data products, reporting processes and data sources
• Undertake data management initiatives such as data quality monitoring, reconciliations, data validations and remediation to ensure the integrity of our regulatory and management reporting.

What you will bring:

Must have

• Tertiary qualification in a technical discipline such as computer science, data science, statistics, applied mathematics
• A minimum of 2 years' experience working as a data analyst or data scientist
• Strong Python, SQL and Excel skills to manipulate and transform data to derive meaningful insights
• Worked with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP
• Experience working with data visualisation tools such as Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau, Tibco Spotfire
• Experience in statistical and predictive modelling, machine learning, and/or natural language processing
• Demonstrated ability to present data in a clear, logical, concise, contextual and visually appealing manner
• Intuition, curiosity and outcome focused with an ability to break down a complex problem and work out how to solve it
• A learning and continuous improvement mindset, happy to share knowledge and learn from others
• Detail focused and proud of your sense of accuracy
• A talent for interpreting, identifying trends and patterns, and telling stories with data
• Communicating and collaborating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Highly motivated, able to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
• Ability to work flexibly and adapt to a complex and constantly changing environment where requirements and outcomes are often unknown at the outset

Nice to have

• Background in regulation, supervision, compliance and/or risk management within financial services, ideally capital markets
• Experience working with cloud orchestration and deployment tools, such as Kubernetes, Docker, Argo Workflows, containers.
• Understanding of software development / engineering best practices (DevOps, Git, MLOps, etc.
• Exposure to digitisation initiatives
