Job summary

Haste Recruitment is seeking an Assistant or Registered Building Surveyor to join a Melbourne-based commercial plan-checking team. The role suits an assistant with 2–3 years of commercial plan-checking experience or a registered surveyor with a strong commercial background.

You will assess childcare centres, warehouses, restaurants, offices and small shop fit-outs, coordinating with architects, builders and consultants to progress assessments and prepare permit documentation.

Assistant or Registered Building Surveyor - Commercial

THE ROLE
We are seeking an Assistant or Registered Building Surveyor to join a Melbourne-based commercial plan-checking team. This opportunity suits an assistant with at least 2–3 years of commercial plan-checking experience, or a registered building surveyor with a strong commercial background.
You will assess a varied portfolio of childcare centres, warehouses, restaurants, offices and small shop fit-outs.
DUTIES

• Review architectural drawings, specifications and supporting documentation for commercial building projects.
• Assess plans against relevant building legislation, the National Construction Code and applicable standards.
• Identify documentation gaps and compliance issues, and prepare clear requests for further information.
• Review amended plans and responses to help progress applications through the assessment process.
• Liaise with architects, designers, builders and consultants to clarify technical matters and coordinate documentation.
• Prepare assessment notes and support building permit documentation, within your experience and registration scope.
• Maintain accurate project records and manage competing assessment deadlines.

ABOUT YOU

• Assistant Building Surveyor with at least 2–3 years of commercial plan-checking experience; or a Registered Building Surveyor with strong commercial experience.
• Relevant building surveying qualifications and, for registered applicants, current registration appropriate to the work undertaken.
• Sound understanding of commercial building compliance and the ability to interpret plans, specifications and technical reports.
• Experience assessing commercial projects, with confidence identifying issues and explaining what is required to resolve them.
• Strong attention to detail and a thorough approach to assessment documentation.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills when working with clients and project stakeholders.
• Good organisation and the ability to manage several applications and deadlines.
