Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Sound knowledge of construction materials testing and soil testing procedures.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical instructions and testing requirements.
  • Experience collecting and analysing technical data, undertaking measurements and calculations, and preparing technical records and reports.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication with engineers, laboratory personnel, contractors and project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Interpreting engineering work instructions and preparing technical sketches, plans, drawings, tabulations and other documentation for civil projects.
  • Carrying out site fieldwork, drilling and laboratory testing of soil, rock and construction materials.
  • Setting up and operating testing equipment, collecting and analysing data, and performing calculations.
  • Interpreting project specs and work instructions, assisting in testing programs and estimating material quantities/costs.
  • Monitoring project progress, inspecting works, and reporting findings to the Project Manager or engineer.
  • Documenting technical issues and non-conforming results for geotechnical reports.

A&Y Associates is an established engineering consultancy based in Melbourne, Victoria, specialising in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and professional drilling services. We support a broad range of residential, commercial, land development and infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on technical quality, safety, compliance and cost-effective engineering solutions.

About the Role

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Civil Engineering Technician to join our growing engineering team. The successful candidate will provide technical support to Civil and Geotechnical Engineers across geotechnical investigations, construction materials testing, civil works inspections and engineering project delivery. The role involves carrying out field and laboratory testing, collecting and analysing technical data, undertaking engineering measurements and calculations, preparing sketches and technical records, inspecting civil works, and assisting Engineers with technical assessments and project documentation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Interpreting engineering work instructions and preparing technical sketches, plans, drawings, tabulations and other technical documentation for civil engineering projects such as drainage, water supply, roads and related infrastructure.

Carrying out site fieldwork, drilling and laboratory testing, including collecting, testing and analysing soil, rock and construction material samples.

Setting up and operating technical instruments and testing equipment, collecting and analysing field and laboratory data, and performing engineering measurements, computations and routine calculations.

Interpreting project specifications and work instructions, assisting in preparing testing and work programs, and assisting with estimating material quantities and material costs in line with project requirements.

Supporting project monitoring by inspecting civil engineering works, undertaking relevant field testing and measurements, monitoring maintenance activities and project progress, and reporting findings to the Project Manager or responsible Engineer.

Identifying and documenting technical issues, unusual site conditions and non-conforming test results arising during field and laboratory activities, and contributing factual technical information to geotechnical reports and other project documentation for review by the responsible Engineer.

Performing other reasonable duties consistent with the position of Civil Engineering Technician.

The essential requirements for this position

Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline.

Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, civil laboratory testing and/or field investigation.

Sound knowledge of construction materials, soil testing, civil engineering principles and relevant testing procedures.

Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical instructions and testing requirements.

Experience in collecting and analysing technical data, undertaking engineering measurements and calculations, and preparing technical records and reports.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.

Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Engineers, laboratory personnel, contractors and project teams.

Ability and willingness to undertake both field and laboratory-based duties as required.

Experience in collecting and analysing technical data, undertaking engineering measurements and calculations, and preparing technical records and reports.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
