Job summary

Middlemount Coal Mine in Queensland seeks a CHPP Manager to lead the CHPP team, delivering safe, reliable processing in an open-cut mining environment. You will provide strategic direction, technical leadership and coordinate resources to meet production targets while maintaining safety, compliance and environmental performance.

You will work with maintenance and operations teams to optimise plant performance, manage budgets, and drive continuous improvement across CHPP operations.

Qualifications

  • Trade qualification or degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Current driver’s licence and ability to work in a mining environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance roles within fixed plant environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team development experience.
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically to support operational decisions.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budget management, cost control, forecasting, and performance analysis.
  • High level of safety awareness and commitment to zero harm.
  • Ability to identify and manage CHPP related risks, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Project management of small projects and/or shutdowns.

Job description

Middlemount Coal Mine is located approximately 90 kilometres north-east of Emerald and some 7 kilometres west of the township of Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Middlemount Coal Mine is an open-cut coal mine which uses conventional truck and shovel methods. Middlemount Coal commenced its full-scale operations in November 2011, producing approximately 4Mtpa of coking and PCI coal for export. Middlemount Coal Mine has a life expectancy estimated to be more than 30 years.

Middlemount Coal Pty Ltd (Middlemount) is an incorporated joint venture between Peabody Energy Australia Pty Ltd and Yancoal Australia Ltd.

About the Role

Reporting to the CHPP Manager, you will lead the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) team to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective processing operations within our open cut mining environment. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing CHPP production and maintenance activities, ensuring plant performance, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency are achieved.

Working closely with operational and maintenance teams, you will provide strategic direction, technical leadership, and resource coordination to meet production targets while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, and environmental performance. You will also play a pivotal role in developing team capability, fostering a positive workplace culture, and driving continuous improvement across plant operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure effective maintenance management systems and processes to support compliance, planning and operational performance.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a positive safety culture, ensuring all work is performed in accordance with site standards and legislative requirements.
  • Ensure CHPP activities comply with the Mine Safety and Health Act, Regulations, and site procedures.
  • Drive preventative maintenance schedules and work management processes.
  • Collaborate with planning and operational teams to optimise maintenance delivery, equipment availability and plant performance.
  • Execute capital projects and equipment replacement strategies.
  • Manage team performance, training, and development to build capability and engagement.
  • Oversee daily and weekly CHPP production and maintenance activities for fixed plant, mobile and ancillary fleet, including dozers, loaders, and support equipment.
  • Implement asset management strategies to extend equipment life and reduce downtime.
About You

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Trade qualification or degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Current driver’s licence and ability to work in a mining environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance roles within fixed plant environment.
  • Demonstrated Leadership and team development experience
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically to support operational decisions
  • Strong financial acumen, including budget management, cost control, forecasting, and performance analysis.
