Job Description

WHO ARE WE?

The Rev. Bill Crews Foundation (‘BCF’) is one of Sydney’s most trusted frontline charities and has been supporting the community for nearly 40 years.

Our mission is to address homelessness and hardship by providing essential services including food, social welfare, healthcare, education and community programs.

Every day we work to restore dignity, offer hope and create meaningful change for people experiencing disadvantage. Our work is guided by our values of Hope, Integrity, Compassion and Safety and our commitment to helping the person in front of us.

We’re looking for a passionate and creative Chef to join our Crews Café team. We’re rethinking what comes out of our kitchen and we’re looking for someone who wants to be part of shaping what comes next. This is an opportunity for a Chef who loves good food, enjoys bringing fresh ideas to the table and wants their work to have a genuine impact in the community.

Reporting to the Crews Café Coordinator , you’ll take ownership of day-to-day food preparation and café service while helping us refresh and develop our food offering. You’ll have the freedom to contribute ideas, create specials, make the most of seasonal and donated produce and find practical ways to deliver food that is simple, delicious and made with care.

You’ll work alongside staff and volunteers in a welcoming community environment where good food is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about dignity, connection and creating a positive experience for every person who walks through our doors.

This is a casual position based in Ashfield, offering approximately 12–20 hours per week across weekday shifts.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised kitchen in accordance with food safety and hygiene requirements.
  • Manage stock levels, rotate inventory and minimise food waste.
  • Make creative and practical use of seasonal and donated produce.
  • Monitor food quality, presentation and consistency.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to support smooth café operations.
  • Support effective kitchen processes and service delivery.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You’re a confident and capable Chef who is comfortable taking ownership of a small kitchen while still enjoying being part of a broader team.

You’re creative and practical and you know that great food doesn’t need to be complicated. You can look at what’s available and think about how to make the most of it while balancing quality, efficiency and cost.

Most importantly, you understand that Crews Café is a community environment. You’ll be working alongside staff and volunteers and serving people from all walks of life. You’ll bring patience, respect and a genuine interest in the people and community around you.

  • Fresh ideas and enthusiasm for menu development and improvement.
  • A current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
  • A strong understanding of food safety, hygiene and safe kitchen practices.
  • Effective organisational and time management skills.
  • Reliability and flexibility across weekday shifts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work positively with staff, volunteers and people from diverse backgrounds.
