About Metal Art & Design

Metal Art & Design is a Geelong-based architectural metalwork company specialising in custom fabrication and installation for commercial and residential projects throughout Geelong, the Surf Coast and Melbourne.

Our work includes architectural handrails and balustrades, staircases, window shrouds, screens, façades, feature metalwork, doors, frames and a wide range of custom architectural products.

We are looking for an experienced Carpenter / Builder / Site Installer / Shopfitter who has strong set-out skills, a high level of attention to detail and takes pride in achieving a clean, seamless finished installation.

This role would suit someone from a carpentry, building or shopfitting background who enjoys varied work, problem-solving and working with high-end architectural finishes.

The Role

This is a hands‑on role combining workshop fabrication and preparation with site installations.

You will play an important part in ensuring our products not only leave the workshop correctly fabricated, but are also installed accurately, neatly and to the standard expected on high‑end architectural projects.

You will work from our Corio workshop and travel to sites throughout Geelong, the Surf Coast and Melbourne.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Installing architectural metalwork including:

  • Handrails

  • Balustrades

  • Window shrouds

  • Screens

  • Architectural frames

  • Feature metalwork

  • Custom fabricated products

• Accurate site set‑out and installation

• Completing site measures and verifying dimensions before fabrication

• Checking site conditions, substrates, levels and fixing requirements

• Identifying potential installation issues before fabrication begins

• Reading and interpreting shop drawings, architectural drawings and plans

• Setting out fixing points, levels, heights and finished positions

• Drilling, fixing, levelling, packing and aligning finished products

• Achieving clean and seamless transitions between our metalwork and surrounding building finishes

• Working carefully around finished walls, flooring, glazing, joinery and other completed surfaces

• Cutting timber, steel and other materials accurately to size

• Assisting with workshop fabrication and preparation

• Preparing components and materials for fabrication and installation

• Test fitting and checking assemblies before they leave the workshop

• Assisting fabricators with assembly where required

• Coordinating with builders, supervisors and other trades on site

• Problem‑solving when site conditions differ from drawings

• Completing final quality checks before handover

• Cleaning installed products and leaving work areas clean and presentable

What We're Looking For
Essential:

• Qualified Carpenter, Builder or highly experienced tradesperson with relevant site installation experience

• Current driver’s licence (Manual)

• Current White Card

• Strong site measuring and set‑out skills

• Ability to accurately read and follow shop drawings and architectural plans

• Strong understanding of levels, dimensions, tolerances and finished building lines

• Ability to work independently and solve problems on site

• Confidence using hand tools and power tools

• Ability to drill and fix into a range of substrates including steel, concrete, timber and masonry

• Strong attention to detail

• Reliable and organised

• Good communication skills

• Ability to work effectively with builders, supervisors and other trades

• A strong focus on quality and workmanship

• Ability to look ahead and identify potential issues before they become problems

The Standard We're Looking For

Our products are often installed during the final stages of construction, where every fixing, gap, alignment and finish is visible.

We need someone who understands that a quality installation is more than simply fixing something to a wall.

You need to be thinking about:

Is it level?
Is it straight?
Are the gaps consistent?
Are the fixings positioned neatly?
Are the packers concealed?
Do the fixings match the finished product?
Does it line up correctly with the surrounding finishes?
Has the product been protected from scratches and damage?
Has the area been cleaned after installation?
Would you be happy handing this directly over to the architect, builder or client?

We want someone who takes ownership of the final result and understands that the installation is the last opportunity to make the entire project look exceptional.

Workshop Involvement

This isn't purely a site role.

When not completing installations, you will work alongside our fabrication team in our Corio workshop.

Depending on your experience, this may include:

• Cutting steel and timber to size

• Measuring and marking components

• Drilling and preparing fixing points

• Preparing components for fabrication

• Assembling and test fitting products

• Preparing installation hardware and fixings

• Checking dimensions against shop drawings

• Building jigs and templates

• Preparing timber components

• Assisting with packaging and protecting finished products

• Helping ensure everything required for an installation is prepared before leaving the workshop

You don't need to be a qualified Boilermaker, but experience working with steel or metal fabrication would be highly regarded.

Highly Regarded:

• Commercial carpentry experience

• Shopfitting experience

• Architectural installation experience

• Experience installing balustrades and handrails

• Experience installing façades, screens or window shrouds

• Experience working with stainless steel, aluminium, brass or finished metalwork

• Experience working from detailed shop drawings

• Experience with laser levels and accurate site set‑out

• Experience taking site measurements for fabrication

• Experience installing into finished architectural environments

• Welding or metal fabrication experience

• Experience working with timber and architectural finishes

• EWP licence

• Forklift licence

• Working at Heights

• Other relevant construction tickets and licences
