Business Development Manager - Education

Business Development Manager – Recycled Mats

Business Development Manager – Recycled Mats

The Company

Aussie Traveller is an established Australian supplier of components and accessories to the caravan, RV and outdoor industries. With a national distribution network and a portfolio of recognised brands, our business is built on strong customer relationships, product development and a commitment to trust, teamwork and customer service.

Aussie Traveller acquired Recycled Mats in early 2026 to sit alongside its existing brand Affordable Camping Mats. These brands bring together practical products, recycled materials and distinctive designs. Established in 2009, Recycled Mats works with Indigenous and other artists to create culturally inspired products, combining a focus on sustainability with meaningful design and education.

We are looking for a commercially driven person to help grow the Recycled Mats brand, reach new customers and build lasting partnerships, particularly within the education sector.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Business Development Manager with a strong background in the Australian education sector and a proven ability to grow sales.

This role will focus on expanding Recycled Mats’ presence across schools, early learning centres, childcare groups and education suppliers, while developing opportunities with community organisations and other relevant markets.

You will be responsible for identifying and securing new business, strengthening existing customer relationships and turning opportunities into profitable sales. This is a hands‑on role that combines proactive prospecting, account management, product presentations and commercial negotiation with a genuine understanding of how education customers operate and purchase.

We are looking for someone who understands the education environment and knows how to turn that understanding into business growth. You may have built your career selling into education or moved from an education role into a successful commercial career. What matters is your ability to connect with customers, recognise opportunities and confidently close business.

Success will be measured through revenue and margin growth, new active customers, account expansion and a well‑managed sales pipeline.

Key Performance Responsibilities

Sales & Business Development

Develop and deliver a sales plan that identifies priority customers, opens new opportunities and grows existing accounts. Proactively approach schools, early learning services, childcare groups and education suppliers through targeted outreach, customer visits, referrals and industry networks.

Manage the sales process from initial contact through to product recommendations, quotations, negotiation and confirmed orders. Identify opportunities to expand purchases across additional classrooms, centres and locations, including larger group and multi‑site accounts.

Education & Customer Engagement

Build relationships with educators, centre directors, principals, school business managers and purchasing teams. Understand customer needs, budget cycles and purchasing processes, and tailor your approach to the people who influence and approve buying decisions.

Deliver engaging presentations and product demonstrations that show how the range can suit different learning and community environments. Recommend appropriate products based on the intended application, available space, practical requirements and budget.

Provide responsive customer service and work with internal teams to resolve issues and deliver a positive customer experience.

Brand Development & Partnerships

Strengthen awareness of Recycled Mats through education networks, customer relationships, industry events and relevant partnerships. Develop opportunities with education‑resource suppliers and group purchasing contacts that can generate ongoing sales.

Work with marketing to create targeted campaigns, product information and customer stories, ensuring enquiries and event leads receive consistent follow‑up. Represent the brand’s recycled‑material focus and artist collaborations accurately and respectfully.

Identify suitable custom‑design opportunities and coordinate customer requirements with the relevant internal teams.

Sales Operations & Reporting

Maintain accurate customer records, quotations, follow‑up activities and pipeline information in the business’s sales reporting and customer relationship management systems.

Provide reliable sales forecasts and share information on customer demand, competitor activity and emerging opportunities. Work with procurement and operations to align customer expectations with stock availability and delivery requirements.

Prepare commercially sound proposals, negotiate within approved pricing guidelines and manage discounts, freight and sales activity with profitability in mind.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality

Contribute to a safe and collaborative workplace by following company procedures, reporting hazards and incidents, and participating in required training. Respect customer‑site requirements, including visitor procedures and any child‑safety clearances relevant to the role.

About You

You are approachable, commercially minded and motivated by achieving results. You enjoy building relationships, but are equally comfortable initiating contact, discussing pricing, negotiating and asking for the order.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • A strong education‑sector background. Practical experience working within education or selling products and services into schools, early learning or childcare. You understand the environment, the stakeholders and how purchasing decisions are made.

  • Demonstrated sales success. Proven experience in business development, account management or education‑sector sales, supported by examples of new customers won, sales targets achieved and accounts grown.

  • A proactive approach to winning business. Confidence generating your own opportunities, reaching decision‑makers and following through from the first conversation to a confirmed sale.

  • Consultative selling and commercial judgement. The ability to understand customer needs, recommend suitable products, prepare accurate quotations and negotiate while protecting margins.

  • Strong communication and organisation. An engaging, professional presentation style, clear written communication and the ability to manage customer follow‑up, competing priorities and territory travel independently.

  • Accountability and teamwork. A commitment to customer service, honest communication and reliable follow‑through, supported by confidence using CRM systems and Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.

An existing education‑sector network would be highly regarded, as would experience selling educational resources, classroom furniture, play equipment or other physical products into education.

Experience managing multi‑site customers, education distributors or custom‑product projects would also be advantageous.

Qualifications & Practical Requirements

Relevant qualifications in education, early childhood, business, sales or marketing would be beneficial, although demonstrated experience and results are more important than a particular qualification.

You will need a current Australian driver’s license and the ability to travel for customer meetings and relevant events. You must also be willing to obtain and maintain any Working with Children Check or site clearance required for your activities.

Key Competencies

Customer understanding and commercial focus: Recognise what matters to each customer and translate that understanding into suitable product recommendations and profitable business.

Planning and initiative: Prioritise opportunities, organise your activity effectively and take ownership of progressing sales.

Influence and collaboration: Build credibility, communicate value and work constructively with customers and internal teams to achieve results.
