Job summary

Biro Strategy is recruiting for permanent workshop roles in regional NSW for a Leading Hand Boilermaker and several Boilermakers. Roles involve hands-on fabrication, assembly and repair of mining equipment, with a four-day week and occasional mine-site trips.

The Leading Hand oversees trades on the shop floor, mentors apprentices, ensures quality control and safety, and coordinates with the supervisor and engineers. Relocation support and visa sponsorship are available for eligible candidates.

Qualifications

• Holder of a Certificate III in Engineering or Fabrication Trade.
• Solid post-trade experience in heavy fabrication, ideally in mining/construction.
• Strong MIG and stick welding, TIG an advantage, ability to read complex engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead by example on shop floor with the leading hand role, guiding apprentices and ensuring quality
• Fabricate, assemble, repair and modify mining equipment and steel structures
• Oversee job sequencing, plan the day with the supervisor and allocate work across crew
• Check fit-up, weld quality and finish before leaving the workshop
• Liaise with engineering team on drawings and feasible changes
• Ensure safety practices and housekeeping are upheld on site and in the workshop

We're hiring: multiple roles, leading hands and several qualified boilermakers

About us

Biro Strategy is collaborating with regional businesses across Australia to bridge skill gaps and facilitate long-term employment opportunities. On this occasion we are recruiting for the mining and construction sector in regional NSW. The business designs, fabricates, installs and maintains equipment and infrastructure for underground and surface mining operations, and holds ISO certifications in quality, safety and environment. Their fabrication workshop builds and repairs equipment for the mines around it: chutes, conveyor sections, structural steel and site equipment, from engineering drawings through to paint. The crew is a mix of qualified boilermakers and apprentices, and they are adding to it.

The opportunity

This is a chance to build a long-term career in mining and construction fabrication without the FIFO lifestyle. We are seeking one Leading Hand Boilermaker and several Boilermakers for permanent, workshop-based roles on a four-day week, with the occasional trip to a nearby mine site when a job needs it.

The leading hand is the senior tradesperson on the floor. You take the harder jobs yourself, check the quality of what leaves the shop, and bring the apprentices along with you. There is a supervisor who runs the workshop; this role is about trade leadership, not paperwork.

The boilermaker roles are hands-on fabrication, assembly and repair of mining equipment and steel structures.

Key responsibilities - Leading Hand Boilermaker

• Fabricate, assemble, repair and modify mine site equipment, steel structures and components from engineering drawings and specifications

• Take the lead on complex or high-tolerance jobs, and check fit-up, weld quality and finish before work leaves the workshop

• Guide and teach the apprentices: demonstrate technique, check their work and sign off on tasks as they progress

• Plan the day with the supervisor: sequence jobs, allocate work across the crew and flag issues with drawings or materials early

• Liaise with the engineering team on drawing queries and workable changes

• Lead by example on safety: toolbox talks, housekeeping, isolation and confined space procedures, correct use of lifting gear

Key responsibilities - Boilermaker

• Fabrication and assembly of mine site equipment, metal components and structures

• Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and specifications

• Carry out repairs and maintenance on plant, equipment and structural assets

• See jobs through to finish: fit-up, welding, surface preparation and paint, ready for site

• Maintain a safe and efficient work environment and work with the team to meet production deadlines

About you

Certification and experience:

You hold a Certificate III in Engineering, Fabrication Trade (or a recognised equivalent) and bring solid post-trade experience in heavy fabrication, ideally on mining, construction or heavy industrial equipment. For the leading hand role, you bring substantial experience and a record of guiding apprentices or junior tradespeople.

Technical skills:

Strong MIG and stick welding, TIG an advantage, and the ability to read and work from complex engineering drawings.

Soft skills:

A settled, patient approach. You hold a small crew to a high standard without needing to be in charge of everyone, and you communicate clearly with the supervisor and the engineers.

Licences and certifications:

You hold a white card and a full driver's licence. Other tickets such as forklift, working at heights or confined space are a plus and can be arranged.

What is offered

• Leading hand: $55 to $58 per hour plus superannuation, depending on experience. Boilermakers: competitive hourly rate, depending on experience

• Four-day week: 10-hour days Monday to Thursday, Fridays off

• Permanent, workshop-based roles with a growing mining and construction contractor and a strong safety culture
