Job summary

MLC School in Sydney's inner-west is seeking an experienced Assistant Head of Department – Mathematics to lead and support our Mathematics team from January 2027. The role combines leadership with active classroom teaching across HSC Mathematics courses, including Extension Mathematics.

You will collaborate with the Head of Department, oversee assessment, curriculum delivery and departmental processes, and provide guidance to colleagues.

Qualifications

• Experienced Mathematics teacher across HSC courses including Extension Mathematics
• Experience with IB Mathematics would be advantageous
• Strong curriculum knowledge and ability to support senior Mathematics courses
• Proactive, dependable with strong organisational skills and attention to detail

Assistant Head of Department - Mathematics

Full-time, permanent | Commencing January 2027

Are you an experienced Mathematics educator ready to take the next step in your leadership journey?

We are seeking an accomplished and highly organised Assistant Head of Department – Mathematics to join our Mathematics team from January 2027. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher who combines strong Mathematics expertise with initiative, sound judgement and a genuine desire to support both colleagues and students.

Working closely with the Head of Department, the Assistant Head of Department will provide practical day-to-day leadership across the Department, supporting high-quality teaching and learning, departmental organisation, assessment and curriculum delivery.

About the role:

The successful candidate will be an experienced Mathematics teacher who has taught across the full range of HSC Mathematics courses, including Extension Mathematics, and is confident supporting or teaching these courses as required. Experience teaching IB Mathematics would be highly regarded, although it is not essential.

Beyond curriculum expertise, we are looking for someone who is proactive and dependable. You will be comfortable identifying what needs to be done, taking ownership and following matters through to completion without requiring constant direction.

With a strong eye for detail, you will also act as an important second set of eyes across the Department, reviewing assessments, documentation and processes to support accuracy, consistency and high standards.

About you:

You will bring:

• Demonstrated experience teaching Mathematics across HSC levels, including Extension Mathematics.
• Strong curriculum knowledge and the confidence to support or take responsibility for senior Mathematics courses when required.
• Experience with IB Mathematics, or familiarity with the IB curriculum, would be advantageous but is not essential.
• Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
• A high level of attention to detail, particularly when reviewing assessments, curriculum documentation and departmental processes.
• Initiative and the ability to work independently, anticipate needs and follow tasks through to completion.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive and collaborative relationships.
• The confidence and experience to provide practical guidance and support to colleagues, including when teaching or classroom management concerns arise.
• A collaborative leadership style and a willingness to contribute positively to the ongoing development of the Mathematics Department.
• A commitment to excellent teaching practice and positive learning outcomes for students.
