Trinity Christian School in Canberra is seeking an Assistant Cook to assist in planning, preparing and providing healthy meals for young children in our Early Learning Centre. The role supports the Principal via the Head of Early Learning and Director of the ELC and is a part-time position for 2 days a week.

The Role

To assist in planning, preparing and providing healthy meals for young children accessing our Early Learning Centre in a manner that is enthusiastic and God honouring, consistent with the school’s vision to provide a Christ-centred education in a learning community of Love, Nurture and Service.

The Assistant Cook is responsible to the Principal through the Head of Early Learning and Junior School and Director of the Early Learning Centre.

This is an ongoing part-time position, 2 days a week.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Assist in the planning and reviewing of nutritionally balanced meals consistent with nutrition guidelines.
• Assist in the preparation and cooking of meals including – morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and late snack.
• Familiarity with special dietary needs and allergies and provision of appropriate meal alternatives.
• Supporting the children’s program by involving the children in cooking and kitchen activities as appropriate including growing herbs and vegetables to use in meals.
• Supporting children’s food choices and overall development by providing opportunities for children to serve their own food at every meal.
• Support the coordination of the kitchen including ordering and purchasing of supplies within the allocated budget and maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining room.
• Awareness and use of health and safety guidelines.
• Establishing of positive partnerships with the children, families and the school and wider community.
• Overseeing and attending to the ELC laundry needs.

Contribute to a safe and healthy workplace by

• Following Work Health and Safety instructions and policies.
• Reporting accidents and hazards.
• Generally caring for own safety and that of others, including visitors, students, parents and volunteers that may possibly be affected by actions or inaction.

Other duties

• Participate in and support the faith community of the School through prayer and communal worship activities.
• Model the faith and values of the School in interactions with colleagues, students, parents and the wider community.
• Attend staff meetings on days when rostered to attend for work.
• Attend the annual whole staff retreat.
• Attend devotions on days and times when at work. All staff are welcome to voluntarily attend staff devotions outside of their allocated work times.
• Participate in school activities requiring staff participation.
• Other duties as required.

Selection Criteria

• Be a committed Christian with a clear understanding of, and support for, education in a Christian School setting.
• Ability to provide healthy and nutritious meals for children.
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work positively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

The successful applicant will have:

• Food Safety and Handling certification (or willingness to obtain)
