Job summary

Department of Customer Service, operating through Revenue NSW, seeks an Assistant Advisor, Legal Debt Recovery to lead complex tax debt cases and negotiations. You will analyse legislation, manage matters within service standards, and engage with customers, their representatives and internal teams to secure compliant outcomes.

You will conduct investigations, asset searches, and prepare legal documentation, supporting effective recovery actions in a fast-paced environment.

About the team

The Legal and Insolvency Tax Debt Team sits within the Business Tax Division and is responsible for managing complex tax debt matters. The team manages approximately 7% of the total tax debt portfolio, including customers subject to administration, liquidation, bankruptcy and other insolvency processes.

The main functions of the team are
  • Applying specialised enforcement and recovery actions to encourage compliance and maximise debt recovery outcomes.
  • Establishing tailored payment arrangements and debt resolutions for individuals and companies, including high-risk and priority matters.
  • Managing escalating debt matters in a timely and effective manner.
  • Conducting investigations to identify compliance opportunities and support recovery strategies.
Key role responsibilities
  • Analyse and interpret legislation, policies and procedures to support legal debt recovery activities.
  • Manage and resolve legal debt recovery cases within agreed service standards and timeframes.

  • Prepare legal documentation and initiate cost-effective legal recovery action where appropriate.
  • Conduct investigations, skip tracing and asset searches to identify recovery opportunities and address customer non-compliance.

The successful candidate will report to the Operations Officer, Legal Debt Recovery. You will manage a portfolio of complex tax debt matters through effective case management and legal debt recovery strategies. You will negotiate debt settlements, liaise with customers and their representatives, and initiate appropriate legal recovery action to achieve positive recovery outcomes.

You will utilise your analytical and investigative skills to identify recovery opportunities, conduct skip tracing activities, assess customer circumstances and support compliance with taxation obligations. The role requires sound judgement, strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in legal debt recovery, insolvency, taxation administration and compliance. You will work closely with legal representatives, insolvency practitioners and internal stakeholders to resolve complex matters and contribute to the effective administration of NSW taxation laws.

Demonstrated experience in legal debt recovery, insolvency administration, taxation administration or a related compliance environment is highly desirable.
