Job summary

OpenAI in Sydney, Australia, invites an engineer to join our Applied AI Engineering team. You will lead customer engagements from discovery through implementation and handoff, shaping workflows that integrate Codex into real engineering pipelines.

You will partner with product, engineering, research, and account teams to deliver measurable improvements, document decisions, and facilitate scalable deployment patterns across client environments.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant experience in software development, deployment engineering, data or infrastructure engineering, technical consulting, or solutions architecture.
• Able to build, debug, and evaluate production-relevant software and quickly understand unfamiliar systems.
• Active usage of AI coding tools and experience integrating agents to automate workflows.
• Technical depth in software engineering, data systems, cloud infrastructure, or enterprise integrations.
• Understanding of how software is tested, released, and operated in enterprise environments.
• Ability to turn ambiguous customer problems into practical technical plans with credible estimates and clear tradeoffs.
• Strong communication with technical leaders and hands-on engineers; able to drive reusable solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead customer engineering engagements from workflow discovery and architecture through implementation, evaluation, and handoff with clear delivery milestones.
• Assess customer repositories, data systems, infrastructure, security controls, and development practices to determine readiness and impact.
• Build and validate workflows with customer engineers, developing integrations, tool gateways, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, and automations.
• Establish baselines, quality and security guardrails, and evaluation methods for reliability and usefulness.
• Turn engagements into reusable tools, architectures, and deployment patterns; provide actionable feedback to product/engineering/research teams.
• Document technical decisions and results for handoff and production ownership.
