Job summary

OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team seeks an engineer who thrives on complex systems and customer collaboration in Sydney, Australia. You will lead engagements from discovery to implementation, building Codex-enabled workflows and integrations while coordinating with product, engineering, and research teams.

You will assess readiness across repositories, data systems, and security controls and establish evaluation methods to prove impact and reliability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant experience in software development, deployment engineering, data or infrastructure engineering, technical consulting, or solutions architecture.
• Ability to build, debug, and evaluate production-relevant software and unfamiliar systems.
• Active use of AI coding tools and experience integrating them into workflows.
• Technical depth in one or more areas such as software engineering, data systems, cloud infra, or enterprise integrations.
• Understand testing, release, and operation considerations in enterprise environments.
• Able to turn ambiguous customer problems into practical technical plans with measurable criteria.
• Strong communication with technical leaders and hands-on engineers to create reusable solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead customer engineering engagements from workflow discovery through implementation, evaluation, and handoff with clear milestones.
• Assess customer repositories, data systems, infrastructure, and security controls to determine readiness and impact opportunities.
• Build and validate workflows with customer engineers, developing integrations, gateways, evaluation harnesses, and automations.
• Establish baselines, guardrails, and evaluation methods for reliable and scalable workflows.
• Turn engagements into reusable tools, architectures, and deployment patterns with actionable feedback for product teams.
• Document decisions and results for handoff and production release ownership.
• Use evidence to decide when to expand, redirect, or stop work based on value and feasibility.
