Qualifications

  • Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and is connected to Aboriginal community and culture.
  • Holds relevant qualifications as an Aboriginal Health Worker and/or Aboriginal Health Practitioner.
  • Experience in Aboriginal health, community services or related environment is valued.

Responsibilities

  • Builds strong and respectful relationships with Aboriginal women, children and families.
  • Supports families throughout pregnancy and early years of a child’s life.
  • Provides culturally appropriate health information, education and support.
  • Supports engagement with antenatal, postnatal, child health and allied health services.
  • Helps families navigate health and community services.
  • Supports referrals and connections to appropriate services.
  • Identifies barriers to accessing care and assists families to overcome them.
  • Promotes healthy lifestyles, child development and family wellbeing.
  • Works with clinicians to deliver culturally safe service delivery.
  • Contributes cultural knowledge to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintains records within the scope of the role.

About the opportunity

Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation has received funding for a Aboriginal Families First Initiative - 2000 Days program to support Aboriginal women, children and families from pregnancy through to a child’s early years.

We are looking for an Aboriginal Health Worker / Aboriginal Health Practitioner who understands the importance of culture, connection and trust in achieving positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

About the role

Your role will include:

  • Building strong and respectful relationships with Aboriginal women, children and families
  • Supporting families throughout pregnancy and the early years of a child's life
  • Providing culturally appropriate health information, education and support
  • Supporting engagement with antenatal, postnatal, child health and allied health services
  • Helping families navigate health and community services
  • Supporting referrals and connections to appropriate services
  • Identifying barriers that may prevent families from accessing care
  • Supporting families to attend appointments and engage with services where appropriate
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles, child development and family wellbeing
  • Working alongside clinicians to support culturally safe service delivery
  • Contributing cultural knowledge and community perspective to the multidisciplinary team
  • Supporting communication between families and service providers
  • Maintaining appropriate records and documentation within the scope of the role
  • Participating in community engagement and health promotion activities.

The role will be guided by the individual needs of families and the broader goals of the Aboriginal Families First Initiative - 2000 Days program.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, with strong connections to Aboriginal community and culture- (This role is an Aboriginal Identified position in accordance with section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination act, 1977).
  • Holds relevant qualifications as an Aboriginal Health Worker and/or Aboriginal Health Practitioner
  • Has experience working in Aboriginal health, community services or a related environment
  • Builds relationships based on trust, respect and genuine connection
  • Understands the importance of cultural safety
  • Is approachable, reliable and compassionate
  • Can work confidently as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Is able to advocate for families and help remove barriers to accessing services
  • Has a strong understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Is comfortable working with families who may have complex or multiple support needs.

Experience working with women, children and families will be highly regarded.
