Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation is expanding its services to support Aboriginal women, babies and families through the Aboriginal Families First Initiative - 2000 Days, from pregnancy through to a child’s early years.
This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and community-minded Midwife to join a multidisciplinary team delivering culturally safe, family-centred care to Aboriginal women and families across the Upper Hunter.
The Aboriginal Families First Initiative - 2000 Days recognises that pregnancy and the early years of a child’s life provide an important opportunity to support health, development, wellbeing and resilience. At Ungooroo, we want to provide families with care that is connected, respectful and responsive to their individual needs.
You will work alongside Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners, Social Workers, Allied Health professionals, GPs and other members of the Ungooroo team to provide coordinated support throughout pregnancy and early parenthood.
As a Midwife, you will provide professional midwifery care and support to women and families, with a focus on:
Antenatal and postnatal support and education
Promoting maternal and infant health and wellbeing
Supporting women to understand their pregnancy, birth and early parenting journey
Identifying health, social and emotional support needs early
Providing appropriate health education, screening and referrals
Supporting breastfeeding and infant feeding
Promoting healthy parent‑infant attachment and positive early parenting
Working collaboratively with GPs, Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners and allied health professionals
Supporting continuity of care and appropriate referrals between services
Working in a trauma-informed and culturally safe manner
Maintaining appropriate clinical records and documentation
Supporting families to navigate health and community services
Contributing to a multidisciplinary approach that keeps the needs of the woman, baby and family at the centre.
We are looking for someone who is:
A qualified and registered Midwife
Child and Family Health Certification
Registered with AHPRA and able to meet all relevant registration requirements
Experienced in, or passionate about, working with women, babies and families
Respectful, compassionate and non-judgemental
Able to build trusting relationships with Aboriginal women, children and families
Comfortable working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Committed to culturally safe and trauma-informed practice
Able to identify when a family may require additional support and connect them with the appropriate service
Organised and able to work independently while contributing positively to the broader team.
Experience working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation or Aboriginal health setting will be highly regarded.
