Job summary

NEXTDC is expanding its hyperscale data centre team in West Footscray. The Data Centre Technician will operate within the facilities team on a 24/7 rotating roster, handling mechanical and electrical systems, cabling, and building monitoring.

The role emphasizes hands-on facility operations and uptime of critical plant, with on-the-job training provided to cover CRAC units, chillers, UPS, generators, and fire protection systems. Australian citizenship is required for security clearance.

Qualifications

• Engineering background (Mechanical/Electrical) or Trade Certification is desirable.
• Mechanical/HVAC/electrical/building services background is highly regarded.
• Basic data centre & cabling knowledge desirable.
• Strong troubleshooting and customer service skills are essential.
• Australian Citizenship required to obtain security clearance for the role.

Responsibilities

• Assist with vendor management for maintenance of core mechanical and electrical systems.
• Support 24/7 critical operations through monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and timely incident escalation.
• Attend to Remote Hands requests such as Rack Power ups.
• Collaborate with internal teams and customers to deliver seamless operations.
• Ensure all visitors and contractors adhere to NEXTDC facility rules.
• Undertaking regular manual handling duties as required.

Growth continues! We're expanding our hyperscale data centre team in West Footscray. Join the next phase.

We are currently looking for a Trades or Technical individual, ideally with a mechanical or electrical background, to join us in the role of Data Centre Technician working within our facilities team operating on a 24/7 basis.

Within this role, we will provide full on-the-job training to bring you up to speed on all aspects of data centre facility management and critical infrastructure. This includes hands‑on exposure to mechanical systems such as cooling infrastructure (CRAC units, chillers, HVAC systems), electrical distribution systems (UPS, Generators, and power distribution equipment), cabling infrastructure, building monitoring systems, and fire protection systems.

Candidates with an electrical, mechanical, or related trade background are encouraged to apply. This role offers the opportunity to apply transferable technical skills within a mission‑critical data centre environment.

The successful candidate will be required to work a 4 – 5 – 5 rotating shift roster with day shifts from 7am - 7pm and night shifts from 7pm - 7am.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Assist with vendor management for maintenance of all core mechanical and electrical systems
• Support 24/7 critical operations through monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and timely incident escalation to meet uptime commitments.
• Attend to Remote Hands requests such as Rack Power ups
• Collaborate with internal teams and customers to deliver seamless operations and support installations.
• Ensure all visitors and contractors adhere to NEXTDC facility rules.
• Undertaking regular manual handling duties as required

This role is not focused on IT but instead centres on hands‑on facility operations, critical plant uptime. The successful candidate will support a range of mechanical, electrical, and facility systems within a mission‑critical environment.

From time to time, during shifts there may be travel between sites as required.

Qualifications

• Engineering background (Mechanical/Electrical) or Trade Certification (desirable)
• Mechanical/HVAC/electrical/building services background (highly regarded)
• Basic data centre & cabling knowledge (desirable)
• Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
• Strong customer service, communication skills, and proactive attitude
• Australian Citizenship required to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role
