Qualifications

  • Extensive experience designing, deploying and supporting AWS cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of AWS security best practices and ISM-aligned controls.
  • Hands-on experience with IaC tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible).
  • Background in cloud engineering, architecture, DevOps or related disciplines.
  • Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automation and DevSecOps.
  • Experience with IAM and cloud governance frameworks.
  • Exposure to tooling such as Jenkins, Git, ELK Stack.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and stakeholder communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy and manage AWS infrastructure including EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda and VPC services.
  • Develop and implement cloud security controls aligned with the ISM.
  • Conduct security assessments, audits and vulnerability reviews.
  • Monitor, maintain and optimise performance, scalability and availability of AWS environments.
  • Build and manage infrastructure through IaC and automation frameworks.
  • Support delivery teams adopting AWS services and provide technical guidance and documentation.
  • Contribute to DevOps/DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipeline development and automation.
  • Provide technical leadership and knowledge transfer to stakeholders and team members.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, resilient cloud capabilities.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to join a high profile government technology program focused on delivering secure cloud hosting and AI platform capabilities across the Australian Public Service.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in designing, building and supporting secure AWS cloud environments that enable innovative digital and AI solutions at scale. You will work alongside technical and business stakeholders to deliver cloud infrastructure, security controls, automation and platform services in a highly regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Design, deploy and manage AWS infrastructure including EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda and VPC services.
  • Develop and implement cloud security controls aligned with the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM).
  • Conduct security assessments, audits and vulnerability reviews.
  • Monitor, maintain and optimise the performance, scalability and availability of AWS environments.
  • Build and manage infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation frameworks.
  • Support delivery teams adopting AWS services and provide technical guidance and documentation.
  • Contribute to DevOps and DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipeline development and automation.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge transfer to stakeholders and team members.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver secure and resilient cloud capabilities.
Essential Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience designing, deploying and supporting AWS cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of AWS security best practices and implementation of controls aligned to the ISM.
  • Hands on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation and/or Ansible.
  • Proven background in cloud engineering, cloud architecture, DevOps or related technical disciplines.
  • Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automation and DevSecOps methodologies.
  • Experience with Identity and Access Management (IAM) and cloud governance frameworks.
  • Exposure to Microsoft DevOps, Jenkins, Git, ELK Stack or similar toolsets.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Experience

The following will be highly regarded:

  • Experience with AWS AI services, including Amazon Bedrock.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Azure environments and services.
  • AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer or equivalent.
  • Scripting experience with Python, Shell or PowerShell.
  • Experience delivering cloud migration programs.
  • Previous experience in Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience working within government or highly regulated enterprise environments.
Working Arrangements
  • Hybrid work model.
  • Minimum of 2 days per fortnight onsite in Canberra.
  • Some after-hours support may be required.
  • Candidates based in the ACT region are preferred, however outstanding candidates from other locations may be considered with a demonstrated ability to regularly attend the Canberra office when required.
