Zusammenfassung

Die Universität Graz sucht eine/jungen Professor/in für Ethnographische Kulturanalyse innerhalb der Europäischer Ethnologie/Empirical Cultural Studies. Die Stelle verbindet methodische Ethnografie mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen.

Aufgabe ist Lehre und Forschung in Bachelor-/Master-/Promotionsprogrammen, Drittmittelgewinnung und internationale Profilentwicklung der Abteilung. Idealer Schwerpunkt: Wahrnehmung, Episteme, Ästhetik, Politik und interdisziplinäre Ansätze.

Qualifikationen

  • Doktorat/PhD in European Ethnology oder vergleichbar.
  • Habilitation oder gleichwertige Qualifikation.
  • Ausgezeichnete Forschungs- und Lehrleistungen in der Disziplin.

Job Description

The professorship in “Ethnographic Cultural Analysis” is situated within the discipline of European Ethnology / Empirical Cultural Studies / Cultural Anthropology, a discipline concerned with the cultural analysis of everyday life. The successful candidate will be responsible for the subject within one of the three core research areas of the Faculty of Humanities, preferably the field of “Perception: Episteme, Aesthetics, Politics”. In research and teaching, the professorship focuses on a relational approach to understanding the practices, experiences, and narratives of social actors, and on analysing how these are embedded in contemporary processes of societal transformation. Particular emphasis is placed on the methodological and epistemological reflection of ethnography as a mode of knowledge production within complex power relations. Preferable qualifications include a cultural anthropologically informed engagement with the role of affect and sensory perception in intersubjective (research) encounters, as well as expertise in creative, collaborative, and multimodal approaches to ethnographic research, teaching, and public engagement.

The successful candidate is expected to attract competitive third-party research funds and to advance the future development of the subject at an international level in both research and teaching. They will initiate and lead research projects at the University of Graz, thereby contributing to the further development of the Department’s research profile. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and research of the subject in the bachelor’s programme in “European Ethnology”, the master’s programme in “Empirical Cultural Analysis and Political Anthropology”, and the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Humanities. They are also expected to participate actively in the academic self-administration of the University.

Employment Requirements
  • Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in the field of European Ethnology / Empirical Cultural Studies / Cultural Anthropology
  • Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career and interruptions in employment due to caring responsibilities)
  • Success in attracting subject-specific project grants, particularly where competitively awarded third-party funds are concerned
  • Skills in higher education didactics including the use of digital media
  • Skills in the supervision and guidance of early career researchers
  • Professional experience abroad during academic career
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Gender mainstreaming and diversity management skills
  • Excellent knowledge of German and English
  • Experience in the field of university and non-university cooperation partnerships
  • Willingness to conduct research-based teaching projects

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.
