Job summary

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead architecture and delivery for cloud-based medical software. You will guide multi-team initiatives, mentor engineers, and shape reusable components across BD Cloud Platform.

Your role involves hands-on contributions, ensuring security, maintainability, and verification, while coordinating with quality and product teams in a regulated healthcare context.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years of software engineering experience with leadership of large apps or capabilities spanning multiple teams.
• Experience owning application architecture and guiding complex initiatives.
• Strong fundamentals with depth in one or more modern languages and ability to evaluate solutions beyond a single language or framework.
• Practical experience with cloud apps, APIs, service integration, containerized software, Git, and collaborative workflows.
• Understanding of SOA and monolithic architectures and trade-offs for reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Ability to turn ambiguous problems into clear technical direction and align across stakeholders.
• Ability to mentor engineers, coordinate across teams, and influence decisions.
• Strong unit testing, automated verification, code review, debugging, and maintainable design.
• Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated solutions and ensure accountability when using AI tools.

Responsibilities

• Offer technical mentorship for a product or shared capability and guide delivery across layers and boundaries.
• Own product-level architecture and significant design decisions within platform constraints.
• Translate ambiguous needs into actionable technical plans and evaluate tradeoffs and dependencies.
• Guide extension of existing apps, creation of new components, and reuse of capabilities across products.
• Coordinate technical work across teams and resolve integration challenges.
• Mentor engineers and facilitate design and code reviews to improve team capability.
• Contribute hands-on where impactful, including prototypes and complex investigations.
• Collaborate with Quality Engineers on testability, verification, and test coverage.
