Job summary

SQUIRE is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and maintain payment systems and financial infrastructure for our platform. This role sits in the Payments Team and requires deep domain expertise in payment processing and fintech, within the Platform Community governed by the Engineering Manager.

The position reports to the Backend Engineer, Payments Team, and collaborates with product and engineering colleagues to ensure robust, scalable payment capabilities.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in application development using Node.js.
• Proven experience in payments or fintech with production payment systems.
• Strong understanding of the payment processing lifecycle: authorization, capture, refunds, voids and chargebacks.
• Experience with reconciliation between internal systems and external payment providers.
• Familiarity with financial ledgers and double-entry bookkeeping principles.
• Experience designing idempotent operations in distributed payment systems.
• Strong knowledge of architecture patterns and best practices.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• English proficiency is a must for communicating with English-speaking coworkers.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain high-quality payment features and financial infrastructure using Node.js.
• Design and maintain reliable payment processing flows, reconciliation processes, and financial ledgers including double-entry bookkeeping and idempotent operations.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to integrate payment systems with the platform.
• Participate in code reviews to improve code quality.
• Participate in interview panels for platform development roles.
• Contribute to the Platform Community by sharing knowledge and helping shape hiring and technology policies.
• Work closely with the Engineering Manager following their guidance.
• Troubleshoot and resolve defects in payment-critical systems.
