The Opportunity
The Studio Technician is responsible for providing technical support to faculty and students in the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises. The technician will oversee and supervise the various art and design studios, shops, and labs supporting diverse specializations.
The Responsibilities
Art and Design studio operations support, maintenance, and supervision:
- Serves as the liaison between CACE and CPDS for maintenance and safety issues.
- Works with faculty to carry out teaching goals, departmental projects, and maintains presentation and gallery spaces.
- Maintains daily operations of studios, shops, and labs.
- Prepares equipment and materials for classes and teaching.
- Assists with exhibition installations.
- Updates inventories for materials and resources used in studios, complying with health and safety standards.
- Orders and inventories materials, supplies, tools, and equipment, reporting as required.
- Supports servicing, replacing spare parts, maintaining equipment, purchasing, and providing technical support for teaching and research.
- Provides technical support and demonstrates safe operation of machines and equipment to staff and students.
First Aid and Workplace Health and Safety
He/she/they will:
- Collaborate with Campus Physical Development on safe operations of workshops and studios.
- Ensure studios are safe, orderly, and equipment is in good condition.
- Provide health and safety workshops, inductions, and monitor safe studio use.
- Ensure hazardous substances are registered, labeled, stored, and recorded properly.
- Conduct risk assessments and maintain safety procedures.
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for studios and activities.
- Participate in environmental health and safety training, inspections, and audits.
- Troubleshoot and develop solutions for studio equipment issues, including woodworking tools and CAD/CAM machines.
- Work with faculty and students to provide technical support.
The Requirements
Must have a B.F.A. or equivalent in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution, with at least 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional requirements include:
- Broad studio experience with chemicals, tools, and machinery in at least three of the following areas: ceramics, pottery wheels, kilns, welding, metal and wood machinery, portable tools, painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, chemicals.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items.
- Knowledge of exhibition preparation, first aid, and health & safety in studios.
- Computer literacy.
- Excellent English communication skills.
